High water pressure and clogged drains can lead to water leakage problems. You can freeze a pipe while repairing the water line through a pipe freezing kit. But, I’d recommend calling a plumber who will repair and freeze the pipe without having to shut down the water to the building. I can tell you how to freeze a pipe for repair as I have seen our plumber using some techniques while repairing.
How to Freeze a Water Pipe for Repair?
Pipe freezing is usually done to create a temporary barrier in a pipe system. When we repaired our water leakage, I learned that the freezing is done on several flow media like fresh water/sea water, oils, diesels, and gels as well. Here’s how the plumber freezed the water pipe -
He twisted a copper loop around the sections that needed freezing.
Then, he injected liquid nitrogen into the copper loop.
After this, he regulated the nitrogen supply so that the temperature was controlled. This is to prevent any damage on the surface.
I also got to learn that the freeze kit uses carbon dioxide from a dip-tube tank. The cold CO2 is minus 100 degrees, which can freeze the water in a few minutes. And a half inch copper pipe freezes in just five minutes.
So, when you’re repairing your water line, creating an ice plug is the fastest way to do it without shutting off the water supply to the building.
I hope this will give you some insights into how to freeze a water line for repair.
