Let me share the detailed process on how to generate e invoice on GST portal with you. All you need to do is:

  • Visit the official e-invoice portal:

    https://einvoice1.gst.gov.in

    .

  • If you are a first-time user, register using your GSTIN by clicking on the “Registration” option, then entering your GST details. After registration, log in using your credentials.

  • Ensure your invoice is generated in a format compatible with e-invoicing, which follows the JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) structure. It can be done through your accounting software if it supports e-invoicing.

  • Alternatively, you can use the offline utility provided by the GST portal to convert your invoice into JSON format. After logging in, navigate to the “E-Invoice” tab on the dashboard and select “Upload”.

  • Upload the JSON file of the invoice that you prepared using your accounting software or the offline tool. Upon uploading the JSON file, the system will validate the data. Once validated, the e-invoice portal will generate a unique Invoice Reference Number (IRN).

  • Along with the IRN, a QR Code will be generated, which contains essential details of the invoice, such as GSTIN, invoice number, and amount.

  • After generating the IRN, download the digitally signed e-invoice with the IRN and QR code embedded in it. This e-invoice is now valid and can be shared with the recipient.

  • Once the e-invoice is generated, its details are automatically populated in your GSTR-1 form for GST return filing, streamlining the tax filing process.

Wondering how to generate e invoice on GST portal. Generating an e-invoice on the GST portal involves several steps to ensure compliance with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) requirements in India. Here is a concise guide to help you know how to create e invoice in GST portal:

Step 1:

Ensure your business is registered under GST. Check if your business falls under the categories mandated to use e-invoicing. Register on the e-invoice portal (https://einvoice1.gst.gov.in).

Step 2:

Visit the e-invoice portal and log in using your GSTIN, username, and password. If you don’t have an account, register by clicking on ‘Register’ and providing the necessary details.

Step 3:

Go to the ‘IRN Generation’ section on the portal. Fill in the invoice details in the provided JSON schema. Key details include:

  • Supplier and recipient GSTIN.

  • Invoice number and date.

  • Item details like description, quantity, rate, and taxable value.

  • HSN code and GST rate.

Step 4:

Upload the JSON file on the e-invoice portal by selecting ‘Upload JSON’ under the ‘E-Invoice’ section. The system will validate the details and generate an Invoice Reference Number (IRN). After successful validation, the portal will generate a QR code and the IRN for the invoice.

Step 5:

Download the e-invoice containing the IRN and QR code. This e-invoice will be digitally signed by the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP). Print the e-invoice with the QR code and share it with the recipient.

Ensure that the QR code is clearly visible, as it contains essential invoice details required for GST compliance.

E-invoices must be reported to the IRP in real-time or near real-time. The e-invoices must be correctly reflected in GSTR-1 and GSTR-2A/2B forms for seamless tax credit reconciliation. Use GST-compliant accounting software for easier generation and integration of e-invoices.

According to the rules and regulations of the GST Council, GST Invoice needs to be registered on the Invoice Registration Portal i.e. IRP. IRP uses a unique Invoice Registration Number i.e. IRN to each invoice. These invoices will then be uploaded on the GST portal for accumulation.

Take a look at the table below to know the GST notification date and the effective date. If the annual turnover of your business falls in the category, you will need to comply with the rules of the GST council.
