My father is a chartered accountant who is often required to generate UDIN for tax audit reports. The ICAI has noted that some dishonest individuals have taken on the persona of CAs to fake signatures on documents issued with the goal of fooling the authorities. Hence, they developed this method to avoid such unscrupulous activities. The ICAI UDIN generation is done to uniquely identify documents connected to a tax audit. It must be included in every tax audit report sent to the Income Tax Department.

I was going through Aadarshukla’s answer about how to generate UDIN for tax audit, and I feel that the steps provided by him regarding how to generate UDIN ICAI are all correct. 

How to generate UDIN number?

To generate UDIN for tax audit, you will need to follow these steps:

  • My father used to visit the

  • Entered name, email address, membership number, firm registration number, client reference number, firm name, document description, keywords, and date of document.

  • After this he used to enter the OTP that was received on the registered email address and mobile number.

  • Following this he was required to click on the submit button

  • The UDIN was then generated and he used it on the documents or certificates by either using a watermark. You can also use a pen.

These are the steps that my dad used regarding how to get UDIN number.

A Unique Document Identification Number (UDIN) has gradually become required for all certificates, GST and Tax reports, and all other audits, attestations, and assurance functions for ICAI members and practising CAs, according to a statement from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). So, you must know the UDIN generation process. Do not worry, I help you understand it.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India has taken this measure to prevent illegitimate third parties from posing as legitimate ICAI members in front of ICAI Authorities and Stakeholders. With effect from 1 April 2019, it is now required for all tax audit reports and GST audit reports.

How to get UDIN number Tax Audit? 

The document type should be "GST & Tax audit" while producing UDIN. The report's signing date must then be indicated. Choose the appropriate part of the Income Tax Act of 1961 from the list in the drop-down menu to which the tax audit relates.

(i) Mandatory fields for the report under 44AB Of Income-tax Act,1961 

(a) Net profit/Turnover as per Form 3CD 

(b) Assessment year

(c) Total turnover as per Form 3CD Ads by 

(d) WDV of Fixed assets as per Form 3CD 

(e) Number for the Firm Registration ( FRN) 

(ii) Mandatory fields for report other than reports under section 44AB. 

(a) Firm registration number(FRN) 

(b) Any figure/value from the report

(c) Assessment year

(d) The obligatory key fields from

Mandatory fields in case of “GST audit” to be filled for generating UDIN 

(i) GST audit under section 35(5) of CGST Act,2017– Form GST 9C:-

(a) Financial year 

(b) Turnover(Inclusive exports) as per the Audited financial statement under clause 5(A) of Form 9C.

(c) Firm registration number(FRN) 

(d) Turnover as declared in annual Return(GSTR 9) under clause 5(Q) of form 9C 

(ii) GST audit under section 66(1) of CGST Act,2017- Form ADT-04:- 

(a) Financial Year

(b) Firm registration number(FRN)

(c) Short payment of tax as per Form ADT-04. 

(d)  Any other amount as per form ADT-04 

Time limit for generation of UDIN and consequences of non-generation of UDIN 

UDIN cannot be generated in advance but can be generated within 15 days of signing the document, such as a tax audit report or a GST audit report. It should be noted that the council has made UDIN mandatory, therefore failing to provide one will amount to disobeying the decision of the council and may result in disciplinary action under Part II's second Schedule's clause (1) of The Chartered Accountants Act, 1949.

What format does UDIN use?

The UDIN will be a 15-digit code produced in the manner shown below:

  • The Chartered Accountant's Membership Registration Number will be the first six numbers.

  • The following 6 numbers represent the certificate's issue date in the format dd/mm/yy.

  • The final 3 digits represent the document's serial number, which was generated via the UDIN portal.

3) You have to enter the OTP received on sms and email and click on “Continue”. The login details will be sent to the registered email address.

Steps to generate UDIN for the tax audit:

1) Visit the

Institute of Chartered Accountant’s official website (ICA).

2) Login with the details received on your email address and you can change the password anytime you want.

3) Then click on the “Generate UDIN” option on the screen respectively.

4) Fill in the blanks: Membership Registration Number, Name, E-mail Address, Firm Registration Number, Firm Name, Client Reference Code / Number, Document Description, Document Date, Keywords, and Values.

5) The keyword is the word which defines the specific value mentioned in the document. 

6) If a Chartered Accountant is validating an individual's sales, for example, one of it's keywords may be 'Sales,' with the appropriate sales figure like its value.

7) You have to provide at least 3 or 5 keywords along with their corresponding value.

8) Enter OTP received on email and mobile and verify the details accordingly.

9) If you want to make any change, click on “Back”. Otherwise click on the “Submit” button.

10) You can’t edit the details once it’s submitted, so make sure you have entered all the right information.

11) After submitting it, UDIN will be generated respectively.
