How to Get Rid of Bad Smell From Wash Basin?

Washbasins get dirty easily, and if not cleaned, they will release a pungent smell. I know some tips on how to stop bad smell from wash basin and others have already shared most of them. But there are more. You can pour a kettle of hot water down the drain to make it clean, mix a tablespoon of salt and dish soap, and then scrub the drain thoroughly or clean the P-trap to get rid of all the dirt and smell. 

How to Remove Bad Smell from Wash Basin?

Here are some ways on how to get rid of bad smell from wash basin:

• Every week, pour a kettle of hot (not boiling) water down the drain. This will help to loosen the grease or dirt buildup, wash it away, and reduce the odours.

• You can mix a tablespoon of regular salt with a bit of liquid dish soap and scrub around the drain area. Salt is great for scrubbing away any sticky residue, and the soap will help you break down any grime that's causing the smell. But make sure you rinse the drain thoroughly with fresh water twice or more. 

• Sometimes, the smell comes from trapped debris in the P-trap (the curved pipe below the basin). You can remove it carefully, clean out the dirt, and reattach it. I will suggest you clean this pipe every three months.

You can even use some market-bought cleaning solutions to get rid of the smell instantly, but it's better not to use them often, or it may damage the drain and pipe.

How to Eliminate Sink Odor?

My wash basin smells bad because overtime, food particles, hair, soap scum, and other debris accumulates in the drain trap or pipes. Bacteria thrive on this organic material, producing unpleasant odours as they decompose it. 

Baking soda and drops of essential oils, and hot boiling water:

I pour a half-cup of baking soda down the sink along with a few drops of essential oils such as lavender, tea tree, mint, eucalyptus, and peppermint. I let it sit for a whole night or for an hour. Lastly, give it a quick rinse in hot water.

Hot vinegar:

Sometimes I also pour a mixture of hot vinegar and one cup baking soda down the drain. It's a great technique to maintain a clean sink and fresh aroma.

Borax, ice cubes, and lemon:

I tried mixing borax with some ice cubes and half a lemon. To begin, I pour two to three glasses of ice cubes and three full spoons of borax down the drain. To get rid of unpleasant odours, I squeeze half a lemon down the drain.

How to stop bad smell from wash basin?

You must remove any obstructions that are the source of the odour in your sink if you want it to quit smelling. The best techniques for how to remove bad smell from wash basin are listed below.

1. Making Water Boil: Plop some boiling water into the drain after bringing the kettle to a boil. Five minutes should pass before you add an equivalent amount of cold water. By forcing any residual grease to solidify, this should presumably remove the obstruction and the odour.

2. Employing A Plunger: A smelly drain can also be cleared out by using a plunger. To clear any minor obstructions, merely position the plunge cup well over the sink drain and firmly pump upward and downward for at minimum a minute. Repeat the boiling hot water flush one last time to get rid of any remaining congealed buildup. Make sure you have a plunge on hand in case!

3. White Vinegar Use: Using a small bit of white vinegar is another easy approach to unclog your sink drain. One cup of white vinegar should be poured down the drain and let stand for 30 minutes before being rinsed out with hot water.

4. Caustic Soda Use: Sinks and plug pipes can also be easily unblocked with Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide). The most frequent causes of clogged drains are grease and fat, and this chemical has excellent degreasing characteristics that allow it to decompose grease and fat. I would advise using a Caustic Soda solution of about 10% to unclog a sink. Put the 10% solution into the sink and let it do its magic. Caustic soda should be allowed to do its charm for around 30 minutes to remove any deposits from the sink. After five minutes, gradually increase the water pressure in the sink by running some water.

5. Check the U-Bend: If these solutions don't work, your sink's U-Bend may be blocked if the problem persists. Under the plug hole of baths and sinks are U-bend traps, often known as waste pipes. Removing any obstructions from a clogged U-Bend is the simplest approach to get it clear. Any leftover debris can be readily brushed away with the help of a stiff brush and a flush of hot water.
