You can get a smooth finish on metal if you follow the painting process correctly. I have done a few DIY projects at home; hence, I will guide you on how to get smooth paint finish on metal. Just be ready with some items like sandpaper, wire brush, primer, main paint, and brushes, then follow all the steps I am sharing next.

How to Get a Smooth Paint Finish on Metal?

You can achieve a smooth paint finish on your metal surface if you follow the below-mentioned steps:

  • The first step is to thoroughly clean the metal surface. I used a wire brush to remove rust, dirt, and any old paint. Then, I washed it with a mild detergent solution and let it dry completely to ensure a smooth base.

  • Next, I sanded the surface using fine-grit sandpaper and created a slightly rough texture so that the main paint could stick well to it.

  • I then started applying the metal primer paint. I always prefer applying two coats; hence, I waited for the first coat to completely dry and then opted for the second coat. You can do the same or just apply a single coat.

  • Then I opted for spray paint designed for metal, holding the can 10-12 inches away. If you want, you can let the first coat dry and then go for the second coat.

This is how do I get a smooth finish with metallic paint. If you want, you can do it yourself, but if you do not have any expertise in this, hire a professional.
