Hello. I took on DIY work to paint our bedroom wall. I got help from my friend who’s into painting. So, she helped a lot in getting the brush strokes straight across the edges. I’ll be able to tell you how to get straight edges when painting. The key is to use a high quality painter’s tape and make proper markings to create a straight line. I’ll share the process below.

What are the Method to Get Straight Edges When Painting?

Here is the stepwise process to get straight edges while painting:

  1. Start by cleaning the walls. Use a soft cloth dipped in soapy water to get rid of smudges, stains and dust.

  2. Take a low-grit sanding sponge and smoothen the wall. Use a tack cloth to wipe and collect dust.

  3. Use a high-quality painter's tape to get better wall adhesion and prevent sloppy, leaking lines.

  4. With a tape measure, mark the desired height using a light pencil. For a vertical line, use a corner as your starting point. Do the process again for the other end of the line.

  5. Pull off a part of the painter’s tape and begin applying it at the first mark. Pull the tape till the second mark. Ensure you don’t blend or bow the tape in order to keep the line straight. Take a putty knife to smoothen out and press the tape.

  6. Lightly brush the edges of the tape using the base wall colour on the side where the contrasting paint colour will go.

  7. Don’t cover the whole width of the painter’s tape. This will seal in the tape for a clean line afterwards. Let it dry.

  8. With a roller or brush, paint the wall with your new accent or contrast colour. Cover the whole surface and once done, peel off the tape at the time when the paint is still wet.

This is the best way to paint a straight ceiling line in my opinion. You’ll get good and clean edges with this. I hope this helps you.
