You will get pipe covers in the market as well made of plastic so you can use them. I have ACs near the windows so what I did is, I painted them with the colour I have on my walls. I also kept them behind the curtains and trust me, you will fail to notice the pipes easily now.

Putting up a large shelf will surely add more storage around your pipes. Buy a wooden shelf and attach it to your walls that span the width of your pipes. Measure how far your AC pipe sticks out of your wall, then cut a square into your shelf large enough for the pipe. Now, simply hang your shelf up and use it to store board games, tools, or laundry supplies.
