I hired a kitchen renovation service to assist me with how to attach granite countertop to island, as granite is a long lasting choice. It is also heat, stain, and scratch resistant.

How to Install Granite Countertop on Island?

I can share the steps that the professional followed;

  • I selected a big granite slab

  • The professional ensured the overhang for the granite countertop by taking into account the thickness of the granite and the installation space. For instance, a 10-inch overhang should be sufficient without the need for additional support if you are using a granite slab that is 1.2 inches thick or more.

  • He had to remove my old kitchen countertop

  • Using a notched trowel, he covered the kitchen island mounting area with a coat of thinset mortar before setting the granite slab on top.

  • Once the granite was in place, he had to seal the edges where it meets the island to prevent water damage and ensure a clean finish.

So these steps were taken to install a granite slab on my kitchen countertop.

Granite countertops look great and I had decided that I needed one in my kitchen. Of course I had no idea how to install granite countertops in kitchen. I had it done during my kitchen renovation by a bunch of workers. I can briefly tell you what all went into installing a brand new countertop in my kitchen.

How to Install Kitchen Countertops Granite?

To install our new countertop, the expert brought with him some essential tools like the:

  • Circular saw with a diamond blade

  • Construction adhesive

  • Plywood

  • Epoxy for seams

  • Granite sealer

  • Clamps

  • Measuring tools

If you are willing to install the countertop yourself, these tools are a must. Now let me answer how do you install a granite countertop:

  • Measure the kitchen space accurately and plan the layout of the granite countertops

  • After you get the measurement accurately, choose high-quality granite slabs that complement your kitchen's style and colour scheme for extra durability

  • Then, using a circular saw, cut the granite slabs to fit the countertop layout. Do not forget to smooth edges using a diamond blade.

  • Next, it would be better if you attach plywood to the cabinet tops to provide a solid base for the granite.

  • Make sure to use a good quality construction adhesive to secure the granite slabs to the plywood base and if multiple slabs are used, secure seams with epoxy and clamp them tightly together

Pro tip: We got the granite sealer to protect the surface from stains and ensure its longevity. You can apply it, too.

These are the steps you need to follow to install a new granite kitchen countertop.

You can install granite countertops yourself if you want to save money or improve your DIY skills. Even I installed a countertop by myself when we moved to a new place. Granite slabs are quite heavy, and improper installation might cost you more money in the long run. That’s why you must know how to install kitchen island countertops.

Consult NoBroker to install kitchen countertop in a professional manner.

How to install a granite countertop on a kitchen island?

1) Measure the distance

You can start by taking precise measurements of the place where you'll be placing the countertop. Whether it's a little piece for your washroom or a large section for your kitchen. Measure from the back of the base cabinet to the wall, and then again from edge to edge.

2) Choose the granite

Now it's time for the interesting part, purchasing. While you'll be able to choose from a wide range of hues (granite available in many shades and variants), you'll only be able to choose from three main styles such as polished, honed and leather granite.

3) Level the base cabinets

You have to use a level to verify that all of the storage drawers are level before fitting your new granite countertop. You'll need to use fasteners under the cabinets in spots where they aren't.

4) Fit the granite

When your granite gets home safely, test it by placing it on top of the base cabinet. Place the piece on top of the base cabinets, providing additional support to spots where the granite has been sliced. If it doesn't fit, either the granite or the wall will need to be adjusted. These methods will also work with the glass kitchen island countertops.

5) Mount the countertop

The best part is that securing the granite to the counters is the simplest aspect of the job. Most of the work is done by the granite's pressure. You can use your glue gun to create a line of sealant between the countertop and your cabinets.

6) Seal the countertop

Now it comes to cleaning the granite after it's been installed before applying the sealant. Using a clean soft cloth, wipe away any dust or dirt in circular sweeps. It will have to rest for 24 hours to produce a seal. Now your curved kitchen island countertop or granite countertop is steady to go!

This is my approach about how to install kitchen island countertops.
