When I recently moved into my new house, I noticed that the front door of the house did not have a peephole. I needed one because of security reasons so that whenever someone comes at my door, I can first see who it is and then open the door. But I didn’t know how to install a peephole in your door, so I looked it up. I found out that it is quite a simple and straightforward process.

How to Put a Peephole in Your Door?

I felt like the security of my house would be greatly increased by installing a simple peephole in my front door.

  • So I started with getting the required material after reading up on the procedure: a pencil, a 1/2-inch drill bit, a cordless drill, and the actual peephole.

  • I started by marking the peephole's height so that everyone in my house could see it.

  • To identify the perfect spot for the peephole, which is normally between 58 and 60 inches off the ground, I used a measuring tape.

  • To make sure I was accurate, I then used the smaller bit to drill a pilot hole. After that, I used the bigger piece to make the peephole's actual hole.

  • In order to prevent splintering and maintain smooth edges, I took care to drill from both sides of the door.

  • When the hole was prepared, I followed the manufacturer’s directions to install the peephole, sliding it in from the outside and securing it with the inner piece.

  • I tightened everything at last and the peephole was ready.

The entire process took hardly around 30 minutes, and now I can comfortably see who is at my door without having to open it. Hope this steps help you as well.

I recently installed a door peephole. The door peephole installation process requires a few basic tools and is a simple DIY project. Nowadays there are several digital door viewers available online. However, being budget-friendly, I opted for a normal door viewer.

How to Install a Peep Hole in a Door?

If you want to know how to install peephole, I can happily share the steps that I followed;

  • Setting up the peephole:
  1. I designated the location for the peephole's installation.

  2. Ensured to select a reasonable height while keeping my family's comfort in mind.

  3. Now, before drilling, I positioned the viewer on a level surface that was wider than its outer diameter and double-checked the placement from both sides.

  4. Installing a peephole is usually done on the door, which must be at least 1-3/8 inches thick.

  • Choose the drill bit:

The drill bit that is chosen will depend on the type of door and the peephole's diameter. A spade bit works well for the majority of wooden doors. For fiberglass or steel doors, you can use a twist bit. I ensured to take out the tiny particles that formed around the hole during drilling with a round file.

  • Drill the hole:
  1. I carried out the drilling procedure, by keeping the door closed.

  2. I drill the hole so that it faces the door at a 90-degree angle.

  3. To prevent a tear out on the opposite side, I ensured to drill it from both sides of the door.

  4. I used sandpaper or a round file to smooth the edges of the hole once it had been drilled. Finally, I cleared the debris or dust.

  • Install the door peephole:
  1. I placed the lens end against the outside of the door. Applied silicone sealant to the interior of the lens's lip to stop the moisture.

  2. I inserted the barrel from one side into the opening.

  3. Placed the threaded part into the hole from the other side, then tightened the screw to hold the peephole in place.

Make sure the peephole is flush with the door when you install it. The indoor viewfinder and outdoor lens need to be firmly fastened to the door. Keep in mind that overtightening can harm the door viewer.

Hi there,

Even though a sturdy door, reliable locks can protect you when you are inside the home, there is a chance someone might enter the house forcefully. I have two kids in my house and I am very protective. Although I have installed CCTV outside the house, I always thought that a stranger could intrude into the house. Kids are innocent and by mistake, they can open the door without looking at the CCTV (I mean, adults make these mistakes! how can we even expect that a kid will always look at the CCTV before going to the door). So, I finally decided to install a peephole in my door. I will share the process of installing a front door peephole.
