In the present age of split and mounted AC, I still own a window AC. If you own a window AC and are wondering how to install a window AC in a sliding window, I can share the steps regarding the same.
How to Install AC on a Sliding Window?
- Measurements:
Determine the air conditioner's width. Ensure that any vents that protrude to the side are included in this measurement. Now measure your air conditioner's height.
Determine the window opening's height. This measurement should be taken directly up against the window to determine the smallest height of this opening.
- Create a wooden frame:
Make sure the corners are square. This is a good time to check that the rectangle fits by inserting it into the window opening. It should fit against the window frame and slip in.
- Finish the frame:
It is recommended that you dry-fit your air conditioner. Position the AC unit such that its lower lip is pressed up against the frame's outside. You'll see that the back lip is shorter than the front, and the top lip is most likely U-shaped. However, don't tighten it yet. Make sure the AC is tilted back enough by taking a look at the entire setup as you hold it in place. Air conditioners are designed to tip away from windows and need to drain.
- Cover the top of the frame:
From my personal experience, it occurred to me that, on summer days, opening the window to let in a breeze would be far more pleasant than turning on the air conditioning. So I considered covering the frame's exterior-facing side with screening material that is stapled. After that, you may install a latch to allow you to open it whenever you choose and hinge the piece of plywood over the opening.
- Installation:
You just need to open the window and slip this frame inside so that it presses against the window frame to install it. Insert long screws through the wooden frame and into the framing surrounding the window aperture to secure the installation and offer further stability. This will also keep the item from leaning straight against the window frame. For the side that cannot be screwed in, angle brackets are an additional option.
Insert a screw or two in the lip to secure the A/C after sliding it into position. Though this is additional security, the unit's weight should hold it in place.
Close up any spaces surrounding the opening. To fill in the spaces, you can use removable caulk, cut short lengths of foam insulation, or use other techniques.
I hope this helps!
