I recently installed a skylight on my flat roof and I loved how it completely transformed the look of a living room while adding natural light and depth to the room. They can also turn an awkward space such as an attic into a beautiful, well-lit lounge room. Let me tell you how you can make your room more pretty with the help of a skylight roof design.

How to Install Residential Skylight Roof Plan Design

Consider factors like the opening mechanism and the maximum opening angle as well as tint and size. You should get skylights with a pre-soldered lip for easy installation. You will be required to design a mounting curb that raises the skylight a minimum of 4-inch from the surface of the roof and tilts it at an angle of 15°. The curb’s inside dimensions will be the same as the specified dimensions of the manufacturer for the skylight opening. Make the curb by framing together 2 x 6 boards. Make sure you don’t crack or warp it. You should not cut through knots and drill pilot holes to nail the frame together. Brace curb’s 2 opposite corners until it’s installed so that it retains its shape.

Measuring and Marking

Use your level, tape, and chalk line to mark the skylight outline on the roof and ceiling.

Cutting Roof

First, cut away the ceiling beneath the skylight’s location. Remove wiring and insulation. If you’ll need to cut through ceiling rafters, brace them temporarily until the skylight is framed. Scrape off the roofing material at the skylight spot and use a saw to cut open the roof. Drop plumb lines from the hole’s every corner to make sure it’s in the right spot.

Framing Skylight

Install header joists vertical to the existing roof joists around the skylight hole. If required, frame the light tunnel with 2 x 6 boards. Above the opening, you will have to install the mounting curb.

Installing Skylight

Lay the skylight onto the frame and nail or screw it perfectly. Cover the shaft with roofing material. For this, you will have to slip tar paper under the old shingles and then lay new shingles over the paper.

Installing Flashing & Insulation

Install sheet metal flashing over an ice and water barrier around the skylight’s border. Use a flashing single piece in the front and step flashing up the curb’s sides. Install insulation inside the light tunnel for preventing heat loss and condensation.
