The first thing I learned about how to mount a window air conditioner was the importance of using support brackets. It helps transfer some of the weight of the AC off the window. This will significantly minimise the risk of damage. Here are some steps I saw the professionals take while installing the AC.

1. First, he set the AC on the window frame and pulled the upper window sash down to the top of the box, then behind the upper flange. I learned this is usually done for additional safety.

2. Then, he attached an L-shaped window locking bracket to make sure the lower sash wouldn’t open accidentally.

3. Once he positioned the AC correctly, he extended the accordion panels from both sides and secured the side panels.

4. Then I saw him cut the strip of foam to a specific length. He inserted it between the upper window and a lower window sash.

5. Finally, he plugged the AC into the outlet and turned on the unit.

How do I Install a Window AC Unit?

1. I would recommend two people to do this job as lifting and installing an AC is a tedious task. 

2. Go through the instruction manual first and know the parts, including the hardware and fasteners. 

3. I also suggest you buy a steel bracket for supporting larger window ACs. Mount it on the outside of the house wall, just below the windowsill.

4. Next, you need to lift the window’s lower sash and centrally align the AC on the windowsill. Pull down the lower sash to the point that it is connected to the top of the AC directly behind the metal flange.

5. Ensure you exert pressure downwards on the lower sash. This will prevent the AC from dropping outside the window.

6. You’ll find two L-shaped metal brackets. Use one on the left, top edge of the lower sash. Take a cordless drill and screw the bracket to the upper sash.

7. Do the same with the other metal bracket by installing it on the right side of the lower sash. 

8. You might require short screws to run through the metal flange positioned across the top of the AC and into the lower sash. 

9. Take the two accordion-shaped extensions, each on either side of the AC. Pull out each extension to close off the space to the right and left of the unit. 

10. Take the vertical flange of every extension and screw them to the window jambs. 

11. Use the foam-rubber weather stripping and place it into the space, which runs along the top edge of the lower sash to prevent outside elements.

• Select a place:

• Make the window ready:

Take off any storm windows or screens from the window. Use a saw to make the window opening wider if needed.

• Put the mounting brackets in place:

On either side of the window opening, the mounting brackets need to be fastened to the window frame. Verify that the brackets are firmly fastened and level.

• Raise the window air conditioner and place it inside:

This may require two people. Place the device on the mounting brackets after carefully lifting it into the window hole.

To fasten the item to the brackets, use screws.

• Close the window's opening:

To seal any gaps, install weatherstripping around the window opening. This will enhance the unit's energy efficiency and aid in stopping air leaks.

• Insulation and waterproofing

There should be no holes in the window to ensure maximum cooling from the window AC. Fill any gaps and holes with foam and seal them. This will also keep mosquitoes and dust out of the room. To establish a secure seal from the outside, use Foam Insulation Tape.
