- Electricity
If you are working over an electricity fixture you easily clad over the top. You can hire an electrician to do the job if you are in doubt.
- Choose the cladding
Cladding comes in different varieties such as wood, tongue and groove, some with pins, and adhesive. You need to choose the type of cladding you want to install in your home.
- Unwrap
Unwrap the timber and cladding and store them in the room two weeks before installation. Remove skirting board, dado rails, and picture rails. If the plaster is crumbly, clean it with a chisel and club hammer.
- Cladding preparation
Ensure that the cladding is smooth and finished. Sand the face of the cladding and remove the dust. Clean the surface with white spirit. Apply two coats of paint preferably water-based paint to prevent the timber from distorting. Do not apply paint inside the groove and back of the tongue.
- Attach Battens
You can attach the battens using nails and a hammer or you can also adhesive for the same. Decide where you want to put the radiators and hand basins. Attach wider battens so that the items can be handled easily from the wall. At 400m intervals attach battens at 90 degrees to the wall.
- Fix the cladding
Use the spirit level to check if the board is levelled. Insert pins and clear the groove. Insert pins through the tongue as per batten. Cut the grove to prevent the tongue of the new board. Attach pins to the tongue.
- Finishing
Insert the skirtings and other mouldings. Use adhesive to place the panel. Fill the holes with a wood filler that matched the wood colour. Rub the filler when it is dry. Apply two or more coats to finish.
