Hi Buddy,

Learning how to lay a patio next to a house is not easy, but that doesn't mean you can't. If you are not particularly skilled at carpentry, you just need some assistance from professionals. I have recently assisted my father in installing a patio next to our house. I would like to explain the process to you.

Construct the patio with expert advice from the home interior experts at NoBroker.

How to lay a patio for beginners:

  • Estimate and mark the area

To begin installing your patio pavers, you must first measure the space, mark it with tape to indicate the location of the patio, and then remove any existing soil.

  • Prepare the ground for pavers

It is useful to use a spade to cut the turf into strips and roll it up if the area is already a lawn or has long grass. By doing this, you can save it for later use to fill in any spaces between the new patio and the lawn.

Dig a hole 150mm deep; that is, 10 cm for the sub-base, 5 cm for the mortar, and 1 cm for the paving slabs. The finished patio should be at least 150mm below the damp-proof course if you are laying right close to the home.

  • Paving slabs' under base should be prepared with a sub-base

Pavement slabs do need to have something underneath them. Paving stones shouldn't be placed straight on grass or soft ground. A sub-base that can give paving slabs the stability they need is essential to the success of patio installation.

A sub-base is required because it will serve as the patio's primary layer of support. Hardcore laid to the proper depth, together with a binding layer of sand, is the greatest sub-base for a patio. After that, mortar composed of sand and cement should be used to lay the pavers.

  • Verify your basis

Add a thin coating of builder's sand to cover. At this point, it's crucial that your base is entirely flat and level, so make sure it is. When placing pavers, keep in mind that you'll need a layer of sand about 2 inches (50mm) deep above the layer of hardscape.

  • Set up your paving slabs

Use a spray bottle or a watering can to lightly mist your paving stones with water to dampen them. Laying dry slabs will cause the mortar mixture to dry out too rapidly.

  • Set off paving

Put a small amount of mortar there using a trowel where the centre of your first slab will go. Work outwards from a corner every time. Use a mallet to gently tap the slab into the mortar after placing it there. Maintain the 10mm space between each slab as you continue to arrange them in rows. The use of slurry priming is essential when installing porcelain pavers; it should be painted over the paver's whole base.

  • Allow some time for drying

Do not walk on the patio for at least 24 hours while it is drying.

  • Complete the job

Finish off your patio by adding more mortar to the spaces once it has dried. More sand and cement should be used in a 5:1 ratio; do not moisten the mixture, as this will stain your slabs. Using your trowel, fill up the spaces with the mixture. Remove any extra mixture by brushing it off your patio's surface.

I would like to conclude here. I hope this answer suffices your query about how to lay a patio next to a house.
