How to Do Swimming Pool Maintenance

Skimming

Skimmers draw in water from the pool surface, where most pollutants such as debris are to be found. They help in collecting the dirt before it starts stinking to help maintain clean water. You are required to check and empty the skimmer basket every week.

Rake and Vacuum

Use a net or rake to scoop out debris like branches, twigs, and leaves. You can use a pool vacuum for removing dirt, leaves, and other debris that has fallen to the pool’s bottom. You will be required to rake and vacuum your pool every week.

Clean the filter

A dirty filter can lead to a cloudy or green pool, even if the chemical levels are fine. So, you are required to clean the filter every week to ensure its proper functioning. Please remember that there are various different kinds of filters and all come with a different cleaning process.

Check pH levels

The pH level is a measure of the water’s acidity. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14, where pH 7 is neutral. Generally, pH levels should be between 7.20 to 7.60. You are required to check the pH levels of your pool daily.

Brushing

Brushing your pool’s walls will remove some particles and build-up that sticks to the fibreglass or concrete. You are required to do this activity every week and before you vacuum. After brushing surfaces, the particles will sink to the bottom and will help you in vacuuming.

Water level

Pools lose water through use and evaporation. You shouldn’t let the water levels fall below the skimmer intake tubes, as this can damage the pump. Just put a running garden hose into the water for a couple of minutes to refill the pool. Don’t forget to check your local water restrictions before doing so! You are required to check water levels every week when you are skimming the pool.

Shocking the Pool

Shocking your swimming pool helps in killing off algae, removing organics in your water, and ensuring your pool stays clear. For this, you will have to add a good amount of chlorine to the water for combating organic contaminants like nitrogen and ammonia that build up in a pool. Be careful while doing so.
