Hi Ishika. There are several ways regarding how to make a soundproof partition wall. You can add a layer of drywall to thicken the walls and create a barrier for sound to travel. There is also a soundproofing material called MLV, which can be installed. I got the same for my house wall to make it completely soundproof. I will share in-depth information below.

How to Make Soundproof Partition Wall?

Here are some ways through which you can soundproof a partition wall:

Acoustic Insulation

You can soundproof your wall by using acoustic insulation. It helps absorb and block sounds that can transfer through the air. DFM acoustic insulation slabs are suggested for use inside a cavity when soundproofing a solid brick wall.

Additional Layer of Drywall

One of the principal ways of soundproofing is to add mass to either side of the wall. You can do so by adding a layer of drywall. The thicker the drywall, the better the soundproofing.

Add a Layer of MLV

You can also add a layer of Mass Loaded Vinyl, which is a soundproofing material that is available in the form of rolling sheets. Adding this between two layers of wall will prevent vibrations from leaking into the adjoining room.

This is all I have to share with you. I hope this helps.

In our apartment, we were able to hear loud noises from our neighbours, and it was quite disturbing. My husband and I always had this concern that our next-door neighbours could always hear what we said, so we used to speak in a very low voice. But that was not at all the solution, so we decided to make the walls soundproof. I wanted to use the best soundproof partition wall material, so we asked a professional to do the task for us. A number of materials can be used for this purpose. You must, however, be aware of how to make a soundproof partition wall so that you can be sure that the process will work out. Also, note that this is not something that can be done on your own without an expert’s help.

How to make soundproof partition wall?

A lot of steps need to be followed to soundproof your partition wall like-

Measure the wall: At first, calculate the location and dimensions of the partition wall or walls. Focus on some factors, like-such as the existing room plan, desired soundproofing level, and any specific requirements or regulations.

Prepare the area:

Clear the space where the partition wall will be installed. Relocate any furniture, decorations, or obstructions that might hinder the construction process.

Instal insulation:

Fit sound-absorbing insulation materials such as dense fibreglass sheets wrapped in acoustic fabric, mineral wool, or fibreglass batts between the studs. Just make sure that the insulation fills the entire cavity tightly to decrease sound transmission.

Instal a second layer of drywall:

Next, mount a layer of soundproof drywall onto the studs, covering the insulation and MLV (Mass loaded vinyl). Ensure that the drywall panels are properly aligned and secured to the studs with screws or nails. Also, leave a small gap between the drywall and any adjoining surfaces to prevent sound leaks.

Apply green glue:

You should apply a layer of a green glue-damping compound onto the second layer of drywall. Make sure you follow the instructions and amount properly.

Add a final layer of drywall:

Instal another layer of drywall on top of the green glue. Align it with the previous layer, and secure the drywall panels to the studs with screws or nails.

Seal gaps and joints:

You can use acoustical caulk or sealant to seal any gaps, joints, or edges in the partition wall. This is a crucial step to prevent sound leakage.

Finish the wall surface:

Finish the sound proof room partition wall according to your needs. You can apply paint, wallpaper, or other wall coverings to achieve the desired result.

It is a very time-consuming process, but it is worth it. At least you won’t get disturbed by any neighbour’s noise, and neither will your privacy be breached.

As for the best soundproof partition wall material, I will suggest you go for dense fibreglass sheets wrapped in acoustic fabric. Other materials you can also opt for are-

  • Mass-loaded vinyl

  • Wool or fibreglass batts

  • Soundproof drywall

  • Resilient channels and more
