How to Make a Wall Shelf Out of Wood

Hello! I wanted to keep my novels on a wooden shelf in my room. I have worked in making DIY wooden structures before, so I was confident. Let me show you how to make a wall shelf out of wood at home with ease. 

The process comprises 13 steps, but I’ve tried to simplify them for you. So, keep reading to find out how to build a wall shelf out of wood.

How to make a floating shelf out of wood

1. First, start by cutting two pieces of wood from a wooden board to the width of the shelf. 

2. As per appropriate measurements, cut two front and side pieces of wood to the length.

3. Now, get ready to assemble the shelf box. Drill two holes into the shorter wooden piece by making them pass through the longer pieces.

4. Take your wood glue and apply it to both ends of the two shorter pieces.

5. Next, drill the 1¼-inch screw into the longer wood pieces and pass it into the shorter pieces.

6. Place the constructed 2 board pieces in between the structure made before like a sandwich. Place one board beneath and one on top.

7. Apply the glue in between the layers.

8. Drill 1¼-inch screws into the shelf’s bottom using a drill or driver, beginning from the top. Also, drive the screws through the structure which is sandwiched in between to keep the layers in position. 

9. We will move on to making the cleat that will hold our shelf by adhering to the wall. Do so by cutting 2 wooden boards in apt sizes.

10. Fix the legs to your shelf’s cleat by drilling two holes through the cleat into the leg.

11. Apply glue to the bottom of each leg and drive 2½-inch screws into the leg.

12. Hang your shelf onto the wall by marking the desired spot on your wall. Then fix the cleat to the wall using screws and a stud finder.

13. Lastly, slide the created shelf box over the fixed cleat. Drill a final screw into the cleat through the shelf.
