As a plant lover, I always wanted to grow plants on walls. I wanted to know the steps involved and the best practices to follow for growing plants on building walls. So, I told a friend of mine who really guided me and gave me tips on it and recommendations for plant varieties that are well-suited for vertical growth.

How do plants grow on walls?

To make plants grow on walls, you can follow these steps:

  1. Choose the right plants. Not all plants are suited for vertical growth. Look for plants that are vining or cascading in habit, and that have relatively small leaves and stems. Some good options include English ivy, pothos, philodendron, and spider plants.

  2. Prepare the wall. If the wall is porous, you may need to apply a sealant to prevent the plants from damaging it.

  3. Attach a support system. There are a variety of different wall planter systems available, or you can make your own using wire or trellis.

  4. Plant the plants. Plant the plants in pots that are slightly larger than their root balls. Fill the pots with a well-draining potting mix.

  5. Water and fertilize regularly. Plants that are growing on walls need to be watered and fertilized more often than plants that are growing in the ground. This is because they have less access to water and nutrients.

  6. Trim and train the plants as needed. As the plants grow, you will need to trim them to maintain their desired shape and size. You may also need to train the plants to grow in the direction of the support system.

Here are some additional tips on how to cover a wall with plants:

  • Choose a wall that receives plenty of sunlight. Usually, plants require a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight each day to thrive.

  • Water the plants deeply and less often. It is better to water the plants deeply once a week than to water them lightly every day.

  • Use a balanced fertilizer. Make sure you fertilize the plants every 2-4 weeks during the season when they are growing.

  • Protect the plants from frost and extreme heat. I would suggest you keep the plants indoors if you live in a very cold place.

I hope this information about plants growing on house walls is helpful.

Hey,

The boundary wall of my house is made of concrete, every time I cross it a thought comes to my mind. It looks ugly and ruins the look of my beautiful house. I figured the best tip to cover the wall was planting creepers, and flowers along the boundary or painting it. I conducted research on plants that grow on walls.

How to make plants grow on walls?

  • Dig a small hole about 18 inches (46 cm) near the wall.

  • Just take a climber like an ivy and place them in the roll.

  • Cover the roots of the plant with nutrient-rich soil.

  • As the plant grows, the aerial roots of the plant will begin to hold on to surfaces.

  • Place support sticks on your wall at an equal interval.

  • The roots will begin to twine their stems around the support.

  • Attach thin wires or a trellis to the structure of the wall.

  • The climber will continue to flourish and grow.

Tips to hide ugly walls with plants :

Plants soften the hard edges of the wall. The wall absorbs water from the foundation or rain. The plants get water and nutrients from the wall. Usually, these plants only grow for a few metres.

You can even hang plants in a planter box, pots, and baskets along the cracks and niches of the wall. You can use a hook to fix the planter box.

This is all from my end on plants that grow on walls
