I am sure you must know how to calculate the square feet of a regular room without any weird shapes. All you have to do is bring out your measuring tape and measure its width and length. Multiply the length by the width and there you go! You have the square footage. Let’s say a room is 20 feet long and 20 feet wide, then 20 x 20 = 400 square feet. But do you know how to measure square feet of a house that has funny shapes? Let me explain that as well.

How to measure square footage of a house that has irregular shapes

While it’s easy to measure the square feet of a single room, people find it hard when it comes to calculating the square footage of an entire house.

Homes can be difficult to measure but they are just a collection of small boxes. So, don’t stress if your rooms have outcropping. Just break those areas down into smaller boxes, and measure every box individually. After that, add up the square footage of every box to obtain the total area of the room. So if your hallway, bathroom, bedroom, and living room are 100, 200, 400, and 500 square feet respectively, then the square feet total is 100 + 200 + 400 + 500 = 1200.

Plus, in case you have a triangular rumpus room or round kitchen or any room of any shape, then worry not. Just use the vCalc’s handy calculator given below

I hope now you know how to measure square feet of house.

H

ello Kshitij, I know how to calculate sq feet of a house. We were measuring the area of our house as the home renovator needed the total square footage. I was in close contact with the team which was measuring our house room by room. They basically divided the whole house into separate rooms and spaces. Then, they calculated the square footage of each room and added them up. Let me describe the method they used below.

How to Figure Out Square Footage of a House?

To find the square footage of the whole house, take one room at a time. Use the following formula for calculation:

Square Footage of each room in sq. ft. =  Length(in feet) x Breadth(in feet)

Apply this formula for each room and note down the square footage. Then, apply the formula given below:

Square footage of the house = Addition of square footage of each room

If there are any irregular room shapes, I recommend dividing the room into smaller squares and rectangles, calculating the square footage of each section and then adding them up to get the figure for that particular room.  If there are obstructions like doors and windows you wish to exclude, calculate their square footage and subtract from the room area.

In case you face difficulty in calculating for any irregular walls, I recommend you consult an expert. This is how to calculate sq feet of house. I hope it helps.

If you are interested in knowing how do you measure the square footage of a house, I am happy to help you with this task.

The first step is to gather the necessary supplies, then you can begin measuring the length and width of each room in your house. Once you have measured the length and width of each room, you can calculate the square footage of each room by multiplying the length by the width. Finally, add up the square footage of all rooms to get the total square footage of your house. I will give a more detailed explanation of this.

How do you Measure Square Feet?

To measure square feet of a house in India, you will need a measuring tape and a calculator.

Step 1: Measure the length and width of each room.

To measure the length of a room, hold the measuring tape at one end of the room and extend it to the other end. Make sure that the tape is taut and level. Record the measurement in feet.

To measure the width of a room, repeat the same process, but this time measure from one side of the room to the other.

Step 2: Calculate the square footage of each room.

To calculate the square footage of a room, multiply the length by the width. For example, if a room is 10 feet long and 12 feet wide, the square footage of the room is 120 square feet.

Step 3: Add up the square footage of all rooms to get the total square footage of your house.

Once you have calculated the square footage of each room, add up the measurements to get the total square footage of your house. This is how to find square feet of house.

When measuring the square footage of your house, be sure to include all areas, including hallways, closets, and bathrooms. You should also include any finished or unfinished basements or attics.

I hope this information about how to measure house square footage is helpful.

How to calculate house square feet is probably the first thing on your mind when you decide to sell or buy a property. And although it could appear to be a trivial statistic, it's one of the most crucial elements in determining a property's value. You may need to know how to calculate a home's square footage for a variety of reasons, including when you wish to sell the property, contest a high tax assessment, or remodel to create more space. So, I will tell you how I calculated my house square feet when I sold my first house.

Property square feet

The precise size of the property is an important consideration when choosing your asking price if you're getting ready to offer your house for sale. An incorrect square footage calculation could lead to an incorrect evaluation price.

For similar reasons, square footage (commonly abbreviated as SF or SQFT) is important in real estate transactions including mortgages. To confirm the value of the property, the lender will require such information.

How to calculate building square feet?

Start with a few basic supplies while getting ready to measure the square footage of a house, condo, or townhouse:

  • Pencil and paper Calculator

  • Measuring tool with a laser or a measuring tape

If the property is a perfect rectangle, you only need to calculate the length times the breadth. For instance, your property would be 2,400 square feet if your one-storey house was 60 feet wide by 40 feet long (60 x 40 = 2,400).

The majority of properties have more intricate floor designs, though. When this is the case, it is beneficial to measure square footage by using these straightforward procedures.

  1. Label every room you need to measure on a rough drawing of your complete space. Include a separate "room" for vestibules and hallways.

  2. Each room's length and width should be measured in feet. To determine the square footage of that room, multiply the length by the breadth. For instance, a bedroom measuring 12 feet by 20 feet has a square footage of 240 (12 × 20 = 240). Write the total square footage of each room in the area provided on your drawing.

  3. Add together the measurements from each room to get the overall square footage of your house.

What to leave out?

A decent rule of thumb is to leave out any area you can't walk on or live in when taking measurements to ensure accuracy. "Gross living area" does not include these types of areas.

Even if they are finished, basements and garages typically do not count against the overall square footage. Because basements are constructed below grade, or at ground level, they are often not included.

With certain restrictions, such as ceiling heights, finished attics can contribute to the total square footage of your house.

Now you know how to calculate house square feet.

Hi Friend,

I used to live in the United States for five years. There was one occasion during my stay when I needed to figure out how to calculate square feet of a house. However, in the United States, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes rules on how to determine the square footage of a home. As a result, it was not an issue at the time. However, when I went to India, I was confronted with a similar problem and was unsure how to calculate square feet of a house in India.

It was during that time that the above-mentioned answer came to my rescue, I am really happy and would like to extend my gratitude towards Sanket for his detailed answer about how to calculate sq ft of a house.

I followed all the steps that he mentioned about measuring the square footage of rooms with irregular shapes. I took his idea of breaking those areas into small boxes for measuring.

During this entire measurement process, the only thing that I required was a measuring tape.
