How to organize packing for a move?

I can share with you some tips on how to organise packing to move. When I moved from one place to another within Bangalore, I started packing early, focussing on decluttering and organising items room by room. I labelled the boxes clearly and used bubble wrap and old blankets to protect fragile items and furniture. To make the move easier, I kept an essentials box handy and hired professionals for the bulky items. But if you want, you can hire professionals and let them execute the task completely.

• Before starting to pack my goods for the move, I went through each room and got rid of things I hadn’t used in months. This reduced the number of boxes to move.

• Next, I began packing the non-essential items like books, off-season clothes, and decor and labelled each box by room and content. For instance, "kitchen utensils" or "living room electronics." 

• For fragile items, I used bubble wrap and newspapers and made sure to fill the gaps in boxes to avoid movement during transit.

•  I also kept a separate box with essentials I’d need right away, like toiletries, a change of clothes, phone chargers, and basic kitchen items, so I wouldn’t have to go through boxes on the first day in the new place.

The series of steps that can help you with organization when moving are:

First, create a detailed moving timeline and checklist. Start packing non-essential items weeks in advance and tackle one room at a time to stay organised.

Stock up on boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and markers. Use sturdy, uniform boxes for easier stacking and transport.

Clearly label each box with its content and destination room. Colour-code or number boxes to streamline unpacking and ensure nothing gets lost.

Place heavier items at the bottom and lighter items on top. Use clothing, towels, or packing paper to cushion fragile items. Avoid overfilling boxes to prevent damage.

Pack a separate box with essential items you will need immediately upon arrival, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, and basic kitchen supplies.

Moving from one place to another is often very stressful. You worry about the credibility of the movers, and your previous things being damaged in the process. More than that you worry about the packing and unpacking aspect. I will share some tips and tricks on how to organize packing for a move. These have been very helpful to me lately. 

Here's the list of efficient ways to pack for moving. 

• Make a checklist of all the items that you wish to take with you. You can decide on which items to keep and which items to donate, discard and recycle in this step. 

• I would recommend, you pack your belongings in boxes of the right size. eg, don’t pack your lamp in a small box smaller than its size. 

• You should pave heavier things at the bottom of the box and lighter things on the top of the box. eg. keep your books at the base and keep a pillow on top. 

• Remember to fill all the empty space with small things like towels, knick-knacks, etc.

• Label all your boxes with a list of content. 

• Add a designated room number on the top of the box. This will help you know which box goes in which room

• All packing strategies fall apart if you don’t use good-quality boxes or tape them in a haphazard manner.

• For expensive items like TV, fridge, washing machine. I would recommend using the original packing or a special protective crate.
