Hi, I would like to tell you how to paint a fiberglass door to look like wood. We have a fibreglass door, which we turned into one that looks like wood to create a uniform design style in the living room. We called a professional to do the job. I supervised while he was working, so I was able to understand the process. You’ll have to start by preparing the door, cleaning and then applying stain for the grain.

How to Make a Fiberglass Door Look Like Wood?

Here is the whole process you can follow:

  1. Start by placing the door on padded sawhorses. Then, remove all the hardware, and clean the dust, dirt and any grease with a cloth and paint thinner.

  2. After this, apply the stain with a lint-free cloth or a foam brush in a circular motion. You must work the stain into the grain pattern.

  3. Take your staining cloth to smooth the stain in the grain’s direction. Don’t wipe off excess stains. The thing with fibreglass is that it doesn’t absorb stain like wood does, so you’ll have to leave a coat on the door.

  4. Use a soft paintbrush and feather out any streaks or lap marks on the same region you stained. Be gentle when you feather. Pay attention to the corners while you feather. Remove extra stain from the brush with a clean cloth in intervals.

  5. If you wish to have a darker tone, wait for 1 day and then apply a second coat of stain in the same way. Let the door be for another day and once the coat has dried, apply polyurethane. Two coats should be enough.

  6. Make sure you apply interior polyurethane on the door’s interior and exterior polyurethane on the door’s exterior.

So, this is how to make fiberglass door look like wood. I hope it helps you.
