During our house renovation, we painted it all over again, including the handrail hence can answer your query about how to paint a wooden handrail. I have watched the entire process since it is an enticing work and can brief it in 5 simple steps. You will need to sand it first, clean the surface, apply the primer, and then paint the handrail.

How to Paint Wood Railing?

Painting a wood railing is not a very tough job and follows the process of normal painting, which is:

  • Start with sanding the entire handrail with medium-grit sandpaper. This will help you to remove the old paint and make the surface even so that the main paint can stick well on the surface.

  • Then clean the entire railing with a damp cloth and make sure no dirt or dust is there, or else the actual paint might not adhere well to it.

  • Now start applying primer to the handrail. You can use the right size paintbrush to apply an even coat of primer all over the handrail. If required, apply two coats of primer, but make sure the coats dry before applying the main paint.

  • Then start painting the handrail with the main paint and let it dry. If you want, you can apply a coat of varnish to make it more glossy and durable.

So this is how to paint wood railings.
