Hi, Like you I was also interested to know how to paint gypsum false ceiling. I have a gypsum false ceiling in my home and as Diwali is coming, I decided to get it painted. I hence researched it, and found that it might seem like a bit of a process but with the right steps, you can do it by yourself. All I need to do is prepare using sandpaper, priming the surface and painting with good-quality paint. I have shared the process below.

Steps to Paint Gypsum False Ceiling

I found that sometimes false ceilings come with joint putty. If your false ceiling doesn’t have, then you have to use a fiberglass on the seams and layer with a jointing compound before preparing the surface with a coat putty.

I came across the following process for painting gypsum ceiling:

Preparation

  • You need to use sandpaper and sand gently on the dried joint putty surface for smoothness.

  • It’s best to use powdered cement-based putty mixed with water. To hide the seams, you can now apply the putty evenly on the joints.

  • Make sure the joint putty is dry, before you sand the ceiling again.

Priming

  • You can use a roller, brush or a spray gun to cover the micro pores of the putty by using a water-based primer and spreading it in even layers to prevent moisture absorption.

  • The primer will seal the surface and help the paint stick better.

Painting

  • Select a good quality paint that suits the gypsum ceiling with resistance to fading and molds.

  • Start mixing the paint by following the manufacturer’s directions and you should use clean tools before painting.

  • You should put on at least two layers of paint, allowing each coat to dry fully before adding the next.

Maintenance

  • Regularly wipe your ceiling with a damp cloth to keep it clean and free from dust, and avoid excessive moisture.

  • Repaint the ceiling immediately, if you see any cracks or peeling.

I hope you find this information helpful.
