Hi Wahida, I am here to tell you how to paint marble effect on walls. I got my walls painted in marble effect last week with the help of an expert painter. I saw the process he performed. So, I am sharing the steps below.

How to Create Marble Effect on Walls?

Here is the process you can follow:

  1. You’ll need 2 to 6 different paint colours with a 3-5 shade difference, along with white paint. Apply painter’s tape to the trims.

  2. Take a large brush and dip it into the first paint colour. Apply the paint using heavy, diagonal and patchy lines.

  3. Do so with all the colours and alternate as you move from one part to the other of the wall.

  4. Now, apply a small amount of every paint colour to the wood pad. Use the pad to apply the same lines in diagonal to the wall.

  5. Blend the colours as you move ahead. Let the paint dry overnight.

  6. Now, mix white paint and water in a ratio of 1:3. Dip a big feather into the mixture and wipe off the excess.

  7. Then, drag the painted feather across the diagonal lines of the wall. Shake, turn, etc, to get the preferred look of the natural marble veining.

  8. Use a soft, dry and clean paintbrush to dab over the veins you have made gently.

  9. Let the paint dry and then remove the painter’s tape.

This is how to paint a wall marble effect. I hope it helps.

Marble can make any space look elegant. During our house painting, I decided to give a marble look to a wall in the living room. I asked the professionals whether they knew how to paint marble look and had done it before and I was glad to learn they did. We had to pay an extra fee for the task but it was worth it.

How to Paint a Wall to Look Like Marble?

Painting a wall should always be done by experts, especially if you are willing to have a texture look on the walls. I was very interested in knowing how to paint to look like marble so I watched the painters execute the task meticulously. Here are the steps they followed:

  • The painters cleaned the walls thoroughly and filled the cracks and imperfections with wall putty

  • Next, they applied a good quality primer and ensured a smooth base for the paint

  • After that, they again painted the wall but this time they used a base coat paint, a light colour, resembling the marble's background.

  • Then, they used a fine brush to create marble veins with a darker shade and blended the veins gently using a dry brush.

  • You can use lighter accents to highlight certain areas and create depth. At least that is what our painters did.

  • Lastly, they applied a clear sealer to protect the painted marble finish and enhance durability.

This entire task took around three days. The primer and base colours needed to be dried completely before creating the marble texture so make sure you look after this aspect. You can try it out yourself but it's better to hire a professional painter to get the best results.

How to create marble effect with paint on walls?

To create the marble effect on walls, the steps you need to follow are-

Gather all the supplies needed:

In order to paint a wall you will need to have some materials like-

  • Old cloth, newspaper or more materials to protect the floor

  • Sandpaper

  • Masking tape

  • Regular paint roller

  • Paint tray

  • Paint brushes of several sizes

  • Primer

  • Glaze

  • Satin paint

Prepare the surface:

You will need to smoothen the wall surface. Use sandpaper to make the surface clean and plain so that the paint can stick to the surface nicely.

Clean the surface:

Once you are done sanding the surface, use a cloth or brush to remove the dust and dirt completely. You can use a cleaning product as well. But if you want to use some home products, use the vinegar and water solution and clean the surface.

Dry the surface:

It is okay if you have used dry materials to clean the surface but if you have used some solutions for the cleaning purpose, let the surface dry completely before starting to paint on it.

Apply primer:

This is the most important step. Apply the primer to your walls and let it dry. Once the first coat of primer gets dried up, apply a second coat. Make sure the original surface is not visible. If it is, you will need to apply another coat of primer.

Paint the walls with the base colour:

The marble effect is given by using two colours. Paint the walls with the base colour. Make sure the primer is not visible, if it is, give another coat of paint.

Mix the glaze:

Miz the glaze with the paint as per the ratio mentioned in the packet or as per the effect you want to have. Usually, two parts of glaze are added to one part of the paint.

Give the finishing touches:

Paint the leftover areas with a small brush and make sure the entire surface is covered. Let the paint dry completely. It will be best to leave it for a day.

Apply varnish:

To make the paint long-lasting and make it shiny, apply a coat of polyurethane varnish and it is done.

I hope this answers how to create marble effect on walls. The process is quite simple. You can definitely do it yourself if you have painted walls before. With these easy-peasy steps you can give your home a new look with a minimal budget. Hope you are tempted to try this as your next DIY project: how to paint a wall marble effect.
