I have a collection of novels, but the books were scattered everywhere in my living room.

I found an old MDF storage shelf and decided to turn it into a bookshelf. I wanted to know how to paint MDF wall panels. On consulting with a painter, I followed the steps, which I have shared here for your understanding.

How to Paint MDF Panelling?

MDF panelling is a type of wall panel. I was cautious while painting the MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) panels to obtain a professional finish.

  1. Surface Preparation: I did the sanding on the surface by using a 180-220 fine grit sandpaper to smoothen the panel which helps in bonding the primer better.

  2. Primer Application: To prevent the dripping and absorbent of the topcoat, apply an oil-based or water-based sealant primer on the MDF panel to increase its soaking ability. I added a layer of the primer in even strokes using a brush, and let it dry completely. Smaller areas need to be handled skillfully and using a brush will make it easier.

  3. Sand Again: After that, I lightly did the sanding again on the dried primer surface to remove any rough patches.

  4. Painting: Select Latex or acrylic paint which is high-quality, as it provides durability and a smooth finish. I used thin layers of acrylic paint and added multiple coats on the MDF panel. I made sure to let each coat dry before adding another layer.

  5. Sealing: I took an extra step to invest in a premium quality sealant to protect my MDF.

These steps helped me give my furniture a new fresh look. I hope this helps you.

How to Remove Paint from Wood Furniture?

You can follow the following steps to paint MDF:

  • Your MDF's edges should be covered with drywall compound, and then left to cure.

  • Sand it with 200-grit sandpaper to make the surface of your MDF smooth.

  • Remove any remaining dust by wiping it with a wet cloth.

  • The MDF should be primed with 1-3 coats of solvent-based primer. Sand gently in between layers as they dry.

  • Use a roller or paintbrush to apply lacquer or oil-based paint on the MDF.

  • Wax, polyurethane, or lacquer sealer might be used to protect the paint finish.
