Our previous flat had metal wardrobe cabinets, and they had become rusty, with the corners slightly scraped, so we decided to repaint them. I had a friend who suggested that I use chalk paint as they require minimal preparation and they are thicker than regular paint, hence, easier to apply. I spoke to my brother and he had some ideas on
how to paint metal with chalk paint, so he came forward to help me.
How to Chalk Paint Metal?
My brother did most of the work and I was a helping hand, observing him throughout. We started from our bedroom cabinet and here are the steps he followed to chalk paint the metal.
Preparation
Before applying paint, it’s essential to clean things up. Firstly, I used a damp cloth to clean the cabinet after which my brother sanded it off. Make sure you wear gloves, goggles, and a mask while sanding as the dust can irritate your eyes.
Apply Primer
Primer becomes essential, especially on rusted, dingy surfaces, to seal the stains and prevent them from bleeding through the paint. It also worked well to block the original colour of our cabinet, giving it a fresh new look.
Apply Paint
We used a round brush as I wanted a soft textured look. This is also the easiest method to paint the surface as you simply have to brush everywhere. We applied two layers of coat. My brother showed me the first one, and I did the second coat. It was easier than I thought.
Finishing Up
Since the cabinet was rusted and looked completely weathered, we had to apply sandpaper to remove some of the paint from edges and handles to give it a youthful look.
