Hello! I saw your question regarding painting on tiles with acrylic paint. I would like to say that it is possible to paint tiles with acrylic colour. I have done so a few months back. Let me give you a detailed process for the same.

How to paint on ceramic tiles with acrylic paints

  1. Initially, you need to clean your ceramic tiles using soap and water. Wash away any dust particles that stick to the surface of the tiles. You wouldn’t want to paint on tiles with dirt sticking to them. Let the surface dry completely once you finish cleaning the tiles.

  2. You may have cracks on your old tiles and you would want to fix them first. To do so, squeeze out some caulk and spread it over the damaged areas of the tiles. Using a putty knife, scrape off the excess caulk. Wait till the caulk dries out to proceed further.

  3. Now, you need to prime the tiles. Tiles usually come in a furnished state. So, you need to sand them with the help of sandpaper to ensure that the paint adheres to the tiles’ surface. Once done, begin priming with an epoxy primer, as it helps the paint to adhere to the tiles’ surface. Apply a thin coat of primer carefully and keep it aside for 2 days.

  4. At last, grab your acrylic paint and start painting the tiles. For small areas, use a paintbrush, and for areas with significant space to work, opt for a roller. Apply a second coat once the first coat dries for the best results. Keep it dry before you place it on the surface.

I hope my answer helps you to learn the process for acrylic paint on tiles.

Painting on ceramic tiles with acrylic paints

Acrylic paint is easily accessible in art supply shops and is water-soluble, quick-drying, and inexpensive. Acrylic paint isn't always the best option for ceramic tile crafts, but it may be used on a tile as long as it isn't baked in a kiln. Having said that, acrylic paint works perfectly provided the surface is properly prepared, primed, and the tiling is not put in high-traffic areas.

How to paint tile with acrylic?

  1. Clean the Surface:

To ensure that the paint sticks to the tiling and not to the mud and debris, wash and prep the surface. When making coasters or other crafts with ceramic tiles, wash every tile with dishwashing soap and water if it is a brand-new tile. Use a multi-surface culinary or restroom cleaner if you plan to paint your dining or bathroom backsplash. Before continuing to paint on tiles with acrylic paint, let the surface thoroughly dry.

  2. Repair Cracks and Chips:

If painting over ceramic tiles that have already been laid, some of them might already be cracked or chipped from use over time. Examine your tiles carefully, then use a putty knife to repair any chips or gaps with caulk. Put the caulk well over the crack or chip, then use a putty knife to remove any excess. Wait the recommended time period for the caulk to thoroughly dry as directed on the container.

  3. Sand the Tiles:

Most tiles – particularly those that have been already fitted in your home – have a shiny coating meant to prevent scratching. The glossy coating, albeit beautiful, will make it difficult for paint to adhere to the surface. The shiny sheen on the tiles should be removed with 100-grit sandpaper. Use the sandpaper to lightly sand the tile's surface, being careful not to use too much power that the ceramic be harmed. After sanding, use a moist cloth to remove the dust.

  4. Prime the Tile:

To stop paint from flaking and peeling due to wear and tear, prime the ceramic. While Bob Vila experts advise using epoxy primer, you can also choose gesso, an acrylic primer that several painters use to prime their canvas. If you only need to paint a tiny region and don't have any other plans for the remaining epoxy primer, gesso may be a better choice since it is more readily available. When painting single tiles, apply an even coating of primer to each tile with a 2-inch paintbrush. Use a paint roller to cover a greater area more quickly when painting over a splashback or wider surface. Let the primer finish drying.

  5. Paint the Tiles:

The tile has already been cleaned, primed, and is now prepared for painting. Paint the design using your acrylic paintbrushes. Depending on the consistency of the paint and the required thickness and vibrancy, you may be required to colour up to three coats. Once the paint is dry, cover the tile with a coating of a water-based polyurethane satin varnish.
