My best friend hosted a party to celebrate the completion of their home renovation. I saw their exterior shutters, which were painted with sea green color, and found it really enticing. I realised how old, damaged, and faded our shutters had become, so I planned to revamp them by adding a fresh coat of paint. But I didn’t know how to paint outdoor shutters, so I took help from a few online tutorials. Let me share what I found.
How to Paint Exterior Shutters?
I found different shutters will require different approaches while painting. We have wooden shutters and I read that oil-based paints are the best for such materials. Before you begin, unscrew the shutters and take them down to ensure a smooth painting. Let me guide you through the process of how to paint outside shutters.
First, prepare the surface for a better adhesion of paint. For this, you need to remove the old, flaky paint using a paint scraper and lightly sand the shutters. Then, you must apply an exterior primer on the wood surface and let it dry completely.
The second step is painting. The most important tip I learned online is never to rush through the process. The process is easy, but if you try to rush things, you might end up creating a mess.
Use a wide, flat brush to paint the surface and apply the paint in thin layers.
As an additional protection, you can add a varnish to prevent them from sun or other weather conditions.
These are the steps I followed to give my shutters a renewed look. I hope this guide will help you as well. If you have other shutters that you’re not sure how to paint, call a professional painter.
