Last year, I painted my bedroom wall black for a fresh look. However, I felt that the dark color made my room feel smaller and uncomfortable. I decided to repaint it in a lighter color, but the only problem was I was unaware how to paint over black walls without the new color being affected by the old black paint. I then researched about it and came across DIY steps which I shared below.
How to Cover Black Paint on Walls?
If you’re unsure about how hard is it to paint over black walls, you can refer to this step-to-step guide:
Supplies:
Selecting a thick high-end roller depending on the roughness of the wall surface can help hold more paint to fill the bumps. You will mainly need acrylic-based primer to cover the dark painted walls.
Sanding and Patching:
Use a painter’s tape to cover areas like crown molding and baseboards, if you don’t want to paint them. Protect your flooring by spreading a dropcloth. Then, remove the loose debris, fill the spackle compound in the small holes and for large holes evenly spread the joint compound in thin layers with a putty knife. Each compound coat needs to dry before sanding the patches to get a smooth texture.
Primer:
Use a white primer to avoid the dark base from fading into a light base and work the roller in M or W strokes, it helps prevent the roller lines in the finish. Additionally, you can add two to three coats of the primer for best results.
Painting:
Add layers of acrylic paint to achieve your desired light shade and to prevent dark color bleeding, apply a primer layer between the paint layers.
I thought of trying these steps on my own but I found that it will take time and effort. So, to save that, I hired a painter from NoBroker. I hope you now have a clear idea of how to cover black wall paint.
