Although my furniture had a glossy look, I was pretty bored with its colour and thus wanted to get them repainted. To get them painted, I hired a painter from NoBroker and asked him how to paint over high gloss furniture. He told me that the process was quite simple and after that, started the painting process. He started by cleaning the surface of the furniture with a wet cloth to remove the dirt and debris from them.

How to Paint Over High Gloss Laminate Furniture?

After cleaning the furniture, he started sanding the surface. I asked why he was doing it and he replied to make the surface rough, so that the paint can bond properly. Here is what he did after that.

  • After the above processes, he started painting the surface of the furniture with a primer. He said that this would help paint to stick better to the surface of the furniture.

  • Following that, he left it to dry for some time.

  • When the primer had dried properly, he painted the furniture.

And that’s about it. So, if you are wondering can I paint over high gloss furniture, yes, you can. Just follow the steps mentioned above. Hope this helps.

Can You Paint Over Veneer Kitchen Cabinets?

Hey Pratik, I can tell you the easiest method of how to paint over high gloss laminate furniture. I made the decision to remove all of my outdated dark brown cabinetry and furniture during my house renovation because they didn't fit in the new area. But, the problem was that it had an over glossy finish. My renovator told me that painting over high-gloss furniture takes three simple steps, which I have mentioned below for your reference.

How to Paint Glossy Wood Furniture?

I have gone through the steps mentioned by Aarti above, but that is too complex. The renovation expert informed me of the following steps that can help paint over high gloss furniture easily:

Clean and Sand the Surface

He advised me to start by giving the area a thorough cleaning with water and a mild detergent. After that, use fine-grit sandpaper to gently sand the surface to eliminate any glossy finish. This will create a smoother finish and improve paint adhesion.

Prime the Furniture Surface

You can use a premium primer made especially for laminate surfaces. It will improve the paint's adhesion and guard against peeling or chipping. Evenly apply several coats of priming, and let each coat dry completely before adding the next. To get a flawless finish, lightly sand the surface once more after the primer has dried.

Apply the High-Quality Paint

Finally, using a brush, roller, or paint sprayer, apply premium paint that is appropriate for laminate surfaces in thin, even applications. Finally, let it dry.

I hope you get an idea of how to paint over high gloss cabinets.

How to Get a Perfect Gloss Finish on Wood?

Furniture paint gloss finish can be a satisfying do-it-yourself project, but for a smooth and long-lasting finish, meticulous planning and execution are essential. The actions to take are as follows:

Materials and tools you'll need for your gloss finish furniture painting project:
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)

  • Liquid deglosser

  • Primer

  • Paint (latex or oil-based)

  • Paintbrushes or foam rollers

  • Painter's tape

  • Drop cloths or newspaper

  • Respirator mask and safety goggles

How to paint over high gloss furniture?
  • Preparation:

Set up your workspace first. To protect your floor from paint spillage, spread out drop cloths or newspaper.

  • Safety:

To protect yourself from dust and fumes when sanding and painting, put on a respirator mask and safety goggles.

  • Cleaning:

Thoroughly clean the furniture to get rid of any oil, dust, or filth. Use water and a gentle detergent, and let it air dry entirely.

  • Sanding:

Lightly sand the high gloss furniture's entire surface with medium-grit sandpaper (around 150-grit). To improve the primer's ability to adhere, the surface should be somewhat roughened. For a smoother surface, follow up with fine-grit sandpaper (about 220-grit). Dust should be removed with a fresh, wet cloth.

  • Liquid Deglosser:

Use a liquid deglosser as directed by the manufacturer. This process encourages paint adhesion while helping to further diminish the shiny sheen. As instructed, let it dry.

  • Primer:

Use a premium bonding primer made for glossy surfaces as a primer. For even covering, use a paintbrush or foam roller. As directed by the manufacturer, let the primer dry fully. Depending on the original colour of the furniture and the coverage of the primer, one or two coats may be required.

  • Painting:

Use your preferred paint colour after the primer has dried. Paints with a latex or oil base are viable alternatives. To uniformly apply the paint, use a brush or foam roller. Apply a second coat if necessary for complete coverage after letting the initial coat to dry.

  • Finishing Touches:

Once the final coat of paint is dry, inspect the furniture for any uneven spots or imperfections. Touch up as necessary. Remove any painter's tape, and clean up your work area.

  • Curing:

Allow the painted furniture to cure for several days or as per the paint manufacturer's instructions before placing any objects on it or using it.

Furniture paint gloss finish can be given a new, contemporary look by painting over it. For a polished finish that will last, careful surface preparation and patience during the drying and curing processes are necessary.
