Hey Kartik. We earlier had a red wall in our bedroom, but over time I started disliking the shade as it was too dark. To add a bit of vibrancy, we switched to a lighter colour. I can thus tell you how to cover a red painted wall. The key factor is to use a high quality primer to cover the previous paint. So, don’t compromise there. I am writing the steps down.

How to Paint Over a Red Wall?

Here is how you can paint over your red wall.

  1. The first step is to prepare your wall for the painting job. This is done by cleaning the entire surface with warm water and soap. Use a soft microfibre cloth to dip into the solution and clean the wall.

  2. Once the wall dries completely, use a 150 grit sandpaper to sand the region. A 220-grit one can also be used. Sand lightly, our aim is to roughen up the wall a bit. Sand in the grain’s direction.

  3. Once again, clean the entire wall. Vacuum the wall to remove all the dust particles.

  4. Next comes priming, which is the most important step to cover red paint. If you are switching to a light paint, white primer works well. You can alternatively go for a tinted primer.

  5. Apply two coats of primer, waiting between the two coats to give ample drying time.

  6. Once the second coat is dry, you can paint with your choice of top coat. Apply 2-3 coats and give drying time for each coat like you did with primer.

I will conclude my answer here. I hope you now get how to cover red paint on walls.

How to paint over Pink Walls?

I had my living room repainted after my partner and I decided to change things around. We used to have red paint, which we got bored of. So, we switched things around with a pastel colour. To understand how to cover a red painted wall, tinted primer was applied to cover the red paint. I am sharing the steps you can follow to give your red walls a makeover below.

How to Cover Red Paint on Walls?

Below, you can find the method to paint over red walls:

  1. The general step to begin with is to get your space ready. Clear out furniture and other items. Place drop cloths on the floor to protect them.

  2. Clean the walls with a homemade solution of dish soap mixed with lukewarm water. Use a soft cloth to apply the solution and clean the walls.

  3. If your walls have any holes or cracks, apply sealant or wall putty to cover the imperfections. In case of wall peeling, use a paint scraper.

  4. Then comes sanding the wall. This is an important step to ensure your wall is smooth and has an even surface. If your walls are now without any imperfections, you don’t need to do all this.

  5. After this, apply the tinted primer that works on red paint. Normal white primers aren’t enough to cover red paint. So, use tinted primer and apply a couple of coats of it. Give time between each coat so the previous one can completely dry.

  6. You can then paint your wall in the appropriate choice of colour.

This is all about how to cover dark red paint on walls. I hope this turns out useful for you.
