Hello there, I am an interior designer and a lot of my projects involve painting plywood for elevating the space. Although my team does the work. But, being the designer, I possess knowledge of the process to ensure quality. So, I can tell you how to paint plywood ceilings. Painting the ceiling isn’t different from painting normal plywood. But, you’ll need to follow a few extra prep steps.

How to Paint a Plywood Ceiling?

  1. To begin, you must first prep the surface and the room. Remove all the furniture and other items from the room. Place drop cloths on the floor and cover all the walls with protective coverings as well.

  2. Take a smooth bristled brush and wipe the ceiling to remove dust and then wipe with a damp cloth. Let the ceiling dry.

  3. Once the ceiling has dried, focus on the holes and cracks, if any. Apply wood filler with a filling knife to seal the imperfections. Let the filler dry overnight. The filler tends to shrink. So, once the filler dries, check the plywood again and see if there is a need for more filler.

  4. You can now sand the ceiling with 180-220 fine-grit sandpaper and wipe it.

  5. Then, you can apply the primer in the direction of the wood grain. If required, apply several primer coats. Sand down the ceiling again.

  6. Apply your paint in the direction of the wood grain. Let the coat dry and then again sand with your sandpaper.

  7. Apply sealant after this to protect the paint against dust.

This is how to paint ceiling plywood. I hope this helps.
