Hi! I know how to paint plywood stairs and will be sharing a quick process with you. The stairs at our home started to wear out. So, I thought of painting them to revive their old look. The task got easier as my sister, who takes up home remodelling projects helped me with it. I’ll tell you all about the process below.

What is the Method for Painting Plywood Stairs?

  1. Remove the carpet from your stairs (if you have one :p). Then, tape over areas around the stairs that you don’t want to paint. Place drop cloths to protect the floor. Open the windows for ventilation.

  2. Move on to filling any gaps or cracks in the stairs. Use wood putty for this as per the instructions of the manufacturer.

  3. Once the putty dries, sand down every step with an appropriate sandpaper.

  4. Then comes cleaning the stairs to remove every particle of dust.

  5. After this, prime the stairs. Use a brush which has synthetic bristles to apply the primer. Begin from the topmost step and work your way down the stairs. For each step, brush along the sides, moving to the centre. Overlap brush strokes a bit as you move across the stairs for an even and clean appearance.

  6. After the primer dries, apply acrylic latex paint meant for floors. Apply thin coats of paint. Apply 2 coats and wait for the first coat to dry before applying the second one.

This is the process. I hope it helps.
