I had recently painted my house. When I first saw the painter working on my popcorn ceiling, I was curious about how he’d manage to paint the bumpy surface, but he had a method that made it look surprisingly easy. As I witnessed the steps, I can share how to paint popcorn ceiling.
How to Paint on Popcorn Ceiling?
Cover Everything: Before starting, the painter covered the floors and furniture with plastic sheets. Popcorn ceilings can flake easily, so it’s important to protect everything from falling bits and paint splatter.
Use a Thick Roller: Instead of a regular roller, he used a thick one, designed for textured surfaces. This roller helped the paint get into all the crevices without damaging the popcorn texture.
Apply Light Pressure: He didn’t press the roller too hard on the ceiling. He rolled slowly, ensuring even coverage.
Avoid Overloading the Roller: He was careful not to overload the roller with paint. Too much paint could make the ceiling too heavy and cause some of the texture to peel off.
Use a Spray Gun (Optional): For larger areas, he mentioned using a spray gun as a faster option. It evenly coats the surface without disturbing the texture, but it requires more preparation to protect walls and furniture from overspray.
Watching this process, I realised painting a popcorn ceiling takes extra care and the right tools, but it’s definitely doable without ruining the texture. Hope this helps you understand how you paint popcorn ceilings.
