Hi friend. We think that painting shelves is a small task, but from my experience I feel that it makes a really big difference to your living space. It gave my home a perfect polished look and a classic appearance. I have mentioned the steps on how to paint shelves that I followed below for your reference..

How to Repaint Shelves?

If you are also thinking of painting your shelves, go through the process I followed to get a perfect finish. Here’s what I did:

Gather Tools

First, I gathered a small foam roller with a rounded end, a 1″ angled brush, a sanding block, some medium-grit sandpaper, and a good gripping primer.

Clean Shelves

Before diving into the painting, since kitchen shelves can get oily and dirty, I made sure to clean and remove any sticky spots. Later, I wiped everything down with a wet cloth to ensure the surface was ready to hold the paint.

Apply Primer

I used a gripping primer for smooth, glossy surfaces. I found this step crucial because it helps the paint stick to the shelves, ensuring a long-lasting finish.

Painting

I “cut in” the edges with my angled brush, and then, I used the foam roller to cover the top and sides of the shelf, finishing with the bottom to avoid any drips. I let the first coat dry, then repeated the process for a second coat.

If you’re going with white paint, avoid the ready-made “Extra White” as it can look a bit too blue. I went with a mixed pure white, and the result was just perfect.

Hope the process helps you learn

Hey friend,

My shelves had started to look dull, so I decided to paint them with fresh colours to make them look new again. This really helped me preserve my favourite pieces. Painting shelves is a simple project with long-lasting results. Let me share some really good shelf painting ideas with you:

How to Paint Plastic Shelves

Prepare Shelves

Dip a cloth in a solution of water and mild soap and wring it. Now, use this cloth to clean your shelves. Once it’s dry, use sandpaper for removing coatings and making the plastic more receptive to primer.

Prime Time

Give your shelves a coating or two of primer in short strokes. Cover areas you do not want to paint with painter's tape. After that, allow the primer to dry for a couple of hours or as recommended on the primer’s label.

Start Painting

Covering nearby areas to avoid spilling paint over them. After that, apply the first coat of paint on the shelves. Once dried, you can apply the second coat.

Play with Paint

To create a two-tone pattern such as a zebra print, apply painter's tape strips in the desired pattern over the base paint colour after a day.

How to Paint Metal Shelves

To paint metal shelves, you have to follow a similar procedure as mentioned above. Just clean the metal shelves first using a damp cloth and then rub steel wool on the shelves to ensure a rougher surface. Next, clean the shelves again using a soft dry cloth. Apply a primer for metals on shelves and then apply paint carefully.

This is how to paint built in shelves.
