Few months back, I had to get my steel beams painted. I knew it was something I can not handle on my own, so I called in painting professionals. Watching them work gave me a clear understanding of how to paint steel beams effectively. It's not just about covering the parts with paint, there's a process that ensures long-lasting results. Let me walk you through what I observed.

How to Paint Steel I Beams?

  • The first thing they did was prepare the surface. They started by cleaning the beams thoroughly, making sure there was no rust, dirt, or old paint left.

  • This is important because the paint won't stick properly if the surface isn’t clean. The professionals used a wire brush to scrub away any rust and then wiped everything down.

  • After cleaning, they applied a special primer designed for metal surfaces.

  • This was an important step because it helps the paint stick properly to the steel. Without primer, the paint would peel off over time.

  • They explained that primers with anti-corrosion properties work best for steel beams, especially if they’re exposed to moisture.

  • Once the primer was dry, they applied the topcoat of epoxy paint. Also, allowed the paint to dry between coats to ensure a smooth and even finish.

The painters said that 3 types of paints are suitable for painting steel beams,

  1. Epoxy Paint: Durable and tough, perfect for indoor beams.

  2. Acrylic Paint: Ideal for areas with less moisture exposure, giving a smooth finish.

  3. Polyurethane Paint: For beams exposed to harsh weather, providing excellent protection.

Hope this helps!
