Hi Priyank, I can show you how to paint textured walls. I got my bedroom wall painted similarly. For painting a textured wall, you start by applying primer and start painting off at the edges. I will describe the process below.

How Do You Paint a Textured Wall?

Here is the detailed process you can follow:

  1. First, clean the surface with a wet sponge dipped in a mild soapy solution. You can use just a dry cloth if the wall has delicate wallpaper.

  2. Look for any holes or cracks and use filler, along with a putty knife to cover them. Remove any power outlets on the wall before beginning the process.

  3. Start by applying painter’s tape along the wall’s edges. Apply the tape where the corner meets the wall and also at the trim and base.

  4. Apply a primer. Apply one coat of the primer and wait for it to completely dry before moving ahead.

  5. Once the primer has dried, start painting off at the edges and cut inwards. This will help you get straight lines along the edge at the time you remove the tape.

  6. After you have painted around the edges, move to a roller, preferably a knit roller cover and use straight lines in up and down motion to paint.

  7. Let the paint dry completely. Then, apply a second coat of paint. This will help in removing any little imperfections on the wall.

  8. Lastly, remove the tape and set up your space.

It is hard to paint on textured walls as the surface is not even and you will have to make it even so that the paint sticks well on the wall. Since I was not a professional, I hired an expert painter to get our textured wall painted, and he executed the work brilliantly. It was a tough job and he had to follow a series of steps to paint them properly. I can share here how it can be done.

How to Paint Walls With Texture?

Here is how to paint a textured wall following 5 simple steps:

  • Clean the Surface:

Start by cleaning the textured walls thoroughly to remove any dirt or dust. You can use a mild detergent and water and then allow the walls to dry completely before proceeding.

  • Prime the Walls:

Apply a coat of primer specifically designed for textured surfaces. This will help you to create a smooth base for the paint and ensure better adhesion.

  • Choose the Right Tools:

Select paint brushes or rollers with a thick nap to navigate the textured surface effectively. A thick-nap roller will reach into cracks and cover peaks evenly.

  • Apply the Paint:

When you're painting textured walls, don't use long brush strokes. Instead, dab the paint onto the surface or use a stippling motion. Start at the top of the wall and work your way down. Keep the pattern consistent as you go. This will make sure the paint covers the textured surface evenly.

  • Allow for Drying and Touch-ups:

Let the first coat dry completely before applying a second coat if necessary. Look for any missed spots or uneven coverage and touch up as needed for a flawless finish.

So this is how to paint on textured walls. If you feel this is a complicated process, hire a professional for the best result.

Textured walls are perfect for hiding several construction sins, but it is not the easiest to live with! It can be quite challenging for some people to paint textured walls though. I've painted textured walls many times, so let me share some tips on how to paint textured walls:

How to Do Textured Walls
  • Pick a primer specially developed for textured surfaces. You can go for either a tinted or a white primer similar to the paint’s color.

  • Pick either an oil-based or latex paint with a low maintenance finish that is reflective enough to highlight the details of the wall texture.

  • Cover your furniture with a tarp and move them to the center of the room to protect them when you start painting textured walls. Lay some clothes on the floor below the textured walls and use painter’s tape to cover ceiling trim, baseboards, and any other areas you do not want to paint. You can use painter’s tape to mask everything that can’t be removed but shouldn’t be painted.

  • Fill every divot or hole on the surface using a putty knife and spackling compound. Allow the compound to cure as per the package instructions.

  • Make sure the wall is free from dust and wipe it using a clean cloth saturated with the soapy solution. This is an important tip on how to paint textured walls.

  • Fill a paint tray with primer and load a paint roller or wall brush with a thick nap cover. When painting, apply a coat of primer to the wall in a “W” shaped textured wall for maximum coverage. Let it sit for some time (as per package instructions). Apply a second coat if discoloration persists after the first primer coat.

  • Fill a fresh paint tray with paint, dip a wall brush into the tray and then paint the edges of the wall to protect abutting surfaces like ceilings from unwanted paint strokes.

  • Load a fresh wall brush from the same tray, and apply a coat of primer to the wall in a “W” shaped textured wall until the whole wall is covered completely.

  • Once done, check for missed parts and touch up as required using either a small roller cover or chip brush. Allow the first coat of paint to cure as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • If you want a deeper hue, you can repeat the above two steps and apply a second coat. Allow it to cure completely before restoring the room.
