My husband and I bought a new farmhouse last month but the windows were white in colour which is hard to maintain and also didn’t match my idea of aesthetics. So, we decided to paint it black. We weren’t sure if we could paint the vinyl windows. So, my husband did some research on how to paint white windows black and it didn’t seem as daunting as we thought. I have shared the detailed steps below for your reference.
How to Paint White Vinyl Windows Black?
To paint your windows black, you just require the right tools and materials. You can follow the below steps that we did to paint your white windows black.
Collect Tools
You don’t require a lot of things. The most essential tools are a large putty knife and a good paintbrush. Apart from these, you need a tinted primer, black paint, drill or screwdriver, and a damp cloth.
Remove Locks
Before starting out, you need to remove all the locks from the windows. You can use a drill or screwdriver for this.
Clean the Surface
Before applying the paint, it’s important and advisable to clean the window surfaces to remove any debris, grease, or dirt. You can use a damp cloth to clean the entire surface to ensure a smooth paint finish.
Apply Primer
Use the putty knife to apply a good coat of primer on the frames. For this, you need to hold the edge of the putty knife with one hand at an angle where the frame meets the glass.
Then, use a brush to paint the frame with your other hand, all the way down to the edge of the putty knife. Continue the same for all the sections. Let it dry completely. This technique seems like a cake-walk but you need to be extra careful not to scrape the knife against the area you just painted.
Apply Final Paint
Repeat the same technique to paint the surfaces black. It will require another 24 hours to completely dry. You may have to paint another coat depending on the finish you want. However, for windows, only one coat is sufficient.
Although we thought this process on how to paint white window frames black would be an easy task, it completely wore us out, especially applying the primer part. The result is decent though but not the kind of finish I wanted.
I would suggest you guys take some professional’s help if you’re planning to paint your windows. They would not only save time but also can give the desired results. Hope this answers your query.
