I’m really fond of decorating my room with wallpaper. When I first wanted to do this, I was clueless about the process. However, my interest drove me to research extensively, and I eventually cracked how to paste wallpaper on wall. It is a simple DIY process, and can be done in a weekend. I have shared the steps here with you.

How to Glue Wallpaper to Wall?

  1. Prep the Walls: First, I ensured my walls were ready for wallpaper. This involved painting over dark colours, sanding lumps, and filling nail holes. After painting, I waited three to four weeks for it to set. I also applied wallpaper primer, which helps with adhesion and makes removal easier. Remember to turn off the power and remove light switch and outlet faceplates, covering the sockets with painter's tape to prevent glue from seeping in.

  2. Add a Plumb Line: Next, I used a pencil and a straight edge to draw a vertical line down the wall where the first panel would go. I started on the left and moved right, making multiple plumb lines for accuracy.

  3. Measure and Cut: After this, I measured the wall and added three inches to both the top and bottom for trimming.

  4. Apply Paste and Wallpaper: Using a roller or brush, I applied paste on the wall, extending slightly beyond where the paper would go. I then hung the first strip, smoothing out air bubbles from the centre outwards. For the next panel, I overlapped it slightly on the previous one and avoided applying paste near the sockets. I used a damp cloth to remove any excess paste.

  5. Trim Edges: Once dry, I used a breakaway knife and taping knife to trim excess paper from the top and bottom, changing blades frequently for clean cuts.

  6. Cut Around Sockets: I made careful vertical cuts on either side of the socket, then a horizontal cut in the middle. After that, I removed the flaps and reattached the outlet covers.

This is all about how to paste wallpaper on the wall. It’s more of a hobby now. However, let me highlight that this process requires a lot of patience to achieve precision. So if you are unsure about the same, it is better that you hire professional for this job.

How to Put Wallpaper on Rough Walls?

Wallpapers are a cool way to change the look of your walls or room. I got bored of watching the same old white painted walls in my room at home. I decided to learn how to paste wallpaper on wall and did it myself. I have mentioned the steps I followed below.

How to Glue Wallpaper to Wall?

  • First, I cleaned the wall to remove dust and dirt.

  • I used filler to fix a few small holes and sanded the wall smooth.

  • I measured the height of the wall and cut the wallpaper strips accordingly, adding a bit of extra length for trimming.

  • I applied paste to the back of the wallpaper with an even coat all over.

  • I started at one edge of the wall and carefully aligned the top of the wallpaper strip. Then I gently pressed it onto the wall, smoothing it down with a squeegee to eliminate bubbles and wrinkles.

  • Then I used a knife to trim excess wallpaper at the edges. I also used a damp sponge to wipe away the excess paste.

I let the wallpaper dry completely and finally my wall had a new look and the entire vibe of my room changed. I hope my answer on how to paste wallpaper at home helps. You can also consult interior designers for a proper renovation.

How to install wallpaper with glue?

To paste wallpaper you will need:

  • Sponge or cloth

  • Mild cleaner

  • Measuring tape

  • Straightedge

  • Pencil

  • Peel-and-stick wallpaper

  • Plastic smoothing tool

  • Utility knife

Step 1:

Turn off the lights for your safety and take a sponge or cloth and start cleaning the wall with a non-abrasive cleaner. Now, wait for 24 hours to dry completely. Check the user manual of the wallpaper company and check if anything is specified on how to paste wall paper.

Step 2:

Measure the width of the wallpaper and transfer the measurement to your wall with a pencil. Take a straightedge to draw the lines from the ceiling to the baseboards. The marks pointed will help you apply the wall paper.

Step 3:

Now take the adhesive backing and peel off 12 inches from it. Line it up properly along the lines marked. From top to bottom press and smooth out the wallpaper peeling off the remaining as you move along. Take the straightedge and a knife to cut along the baseboard properly.

Step 4:

Line up along the wallpaper's paper pattern to ensure that everything is looking seamless. This you can achieve by overlapping the second slightly with the first one already applied on the wall.

Step 5:

Let the wallpaper overlap once you come across a window, door frame, or outlet. Smooth the paper evenly and also switch off any electrical outlets when you are working.

Step 6:

If you encounter any air bubbles, take the tip of the knife or a small pin to create a tiny hole in the middle of the bubble. Now press down to release the air trapped inside the wallpaper. You can also learn how to paste wall stickers by following this method.
