My family has a custom of getting our house ready for the festive season. Every year before Dussehra, my parents hire painters to get the windows and doors painted, giving the home a more modern and lively appearance. I have seen the painters to make the external door frames ready for painting so that the paint goes on smoothly. So as per my experience, I can share the steps on how to prepare door frame for painting.

How to Prepare Exterior Door Frame for Painting?

  • The painters started by washing the door frame to remove dirt, dust, and grime. Last year, I saw that they used warm soapy water and a sponge, and then let the frame dry completely.

  • As our door’s existing paint was peeling or getting cracked, the painter’s used a sandpaper to remove the loose parts. They mainly used a medium-grit sandpaper (120-150 grit) to roughen the surface slightly. Wipe away dust after sanding.

  • After this, they carefully looked for the frame for any cracks, dents, or holes. Used exterior wood filler or caulk to patch these imperfections. Allowed it to dry, and then sand the area smooth.

  • Finally, they applied an exterior-grade primer. The primer helps the paint stick and provides a protective layer.

Trust me, if you follow proper steps to prepare your door frame before painting, you will get a glossy and new finish after painting.
