Hey Zoya, I can share how do you prep walls for painting. I did so while painting my house walls a week ago and the preparation helped in a smooth and even painting job. The methods involve crack and hole cleaning and filling, removing flaking paint, sanding and more. I am sharing the complete process below.

How Do You Prep a Wall for Painting?

Here is the process to prepare your wall for painting.

  1. The first step is to fill the holes and cracks. Remove any loose debris or paster. Use a vacuum to remove dust. Clean the cracks with sugar soap to remove any remaining dust.

  2. Use a flexible filling knife and push the filler into the gap or crack till it smoothes out with the wall. Let the filler dry after this. Sand the filler with a fine grit sandpaper till you have a smooth and flat finish.

  3. Use a scraper to remove any flaking paint if you are repainting the wall.

  4. Take another fine-grit sandpaper and lightly sand the wall.

  5. Clean the wall with sugar soap and wipe it down using a sponge. After cleaning all the walls, use warm water to remove any soap residue.

  6. Lastly, let the walls dry before you apply paint.

This is how prepare walls for painting. I hope you find this useful.

How to prep walls for painting?

Create room

First up, you need to have ample space for the painting to begin. Shift your sofa, furniture and all the other valuables to a different place where painting isn’t taking place. If the items are too heavy to be moved, place them in the center of the area, and protect them from paint spill by covering them with sheets.

Check for any wall damage

Make sure that your walls are hole and crack free. Fill them up carefully in case you find any. You wouldn’t want an uneven surface before painting.

Fix the damage

You must clean any existing gaps with soap and water. Post this, seal them cautiously. Slide the filler inside with the help of a filling knife till you feel that the wall is even. Let it dry, and then smoothen the surface using sandpaper.

Sand

If there’s any plaster that’s peeling off. Take remedial action by using sandpaper.

Clean up

Before starting the painting process, clean the surface well. Use those gloves and scrap off any dirt that’s sticking to the walls.

Dry the walls

Take a moist sponge and remove any soap that’s left behind. Take some time out as the wall dries completely.

That’s all! You’re now ready to paint. You can now answer how to prepare exterior walls for painting. Don’t worry because the above procedure isn’t just for the exterior area of your place. If someone asks, you can also tell them how to prep interior walls for painting.
