I got my house painted around 4 months back but a few after that, I started noticing that, there were marks on the walls. The marks were especially around the palace where sofa was located. I showed these marks to my cousin and asked him how to protect wall from sofa marks.

He told me about a couple of methods about how to protect walls from furniture marks. Some of the methods he told me about are already mentioned in the answer provided by Animesh. Below are the rest of the methods. 

• Moving the Furniture Away

My cousin told me that any furniture that is prone to moving such as a recliner, a sofa, or even a dining chair. He asked me to move the furniture away from the wall so that they dont touch the wall and make marks. 

He suggested me to position it so there's at least a few inches of clearance behind it even when it's fully extended. 

• Keep Furniture From Slipping

When it comes to how to keep couch from hitting wall, he told me to keep the furniture from slipping. For that, he asked me to use stick-on pads or rubber feet for the bottoms of furniture legs. 

My cousin also said that, I can use Anti-slip furniture caster cups and that these are available in several shapes and sizes.

I realised that smudging can happen when the sofa comes into contact with a wall, either because the furniture's dye or finish transfers to the wall or because the friction causes scratches in the paint. I discovered that smudges can be avoided using a variety of techniques, such as keeping furniture in place or keeping it at a safe distance from the walls. 

I cleaned the existing marks with soapy water or oil soap. However, the cleaning changed the gloss and colour, so I retouched the area with leftover paint in a stippling motion rather than strokes to achieve a smooth finish. Apart from this, I would like to suggest 5 important ways by which you can prevent such marks in the future.

• Chairs with a cover-up

Slipcovers are a simple and effective wall protector from sofa that helps to prevent chairs from damaging your dining room walls. Slipcovers lessen the contact with your walls and create minor buffs or marks if the chairs hit the wall. Make sure that the colour and pattern of your cover-ups complement the decor of your home

• Bumpers or Felt can be added as well

Attach clear plastic bumpers to the backs of chairs in your dining area, living room, and kitchen. These devices are most successful when mounted on the broadest point of the back of a chair, usually the upper portion of the backrest, and are often constructed of silicone or rubber with a sticky adhesive backing. Transparent plastic bumpers – use dime-sized – blend in beautifully; if you don't like clear bumpers, they also come in black, light, and dark browns, which match most chair finishes and hues. Another alternative is felt bumpers, which come in a variety of browns to mix in better with natural wood finishes

• Install Chair Rails: 

Place chair rails around the room's perimeter. Between the furniture and the wall, this ornamental architectural feature functions as a bumper. Install the moulding one-third of the way up the wall or 32 to 36 inches above the floor; choose an installation position somewhat lower than the shortest piece of furniture for the best protection

• Non-Slip Furniture Mats: 

To avoid moving, place non-slip furniture mats below tables, seats, and bookcases. Before putting the mats under the furniture, cut them to size. These inconspicuous mats reduce movement, which is especially important in areas with hardwood or tile flooring

• Rugs beneath furniture:

   

Place area rugs beneath furniture near walls, and use the pile of the carpet to keep the furniture in place. Place the rugs so that the entire furniture is sitting on top of them, or so that the front legs of the furniture are resting on them. To prevent the rug from shifting, you may need to place a rubberized carpet pad underneath it, depending on the rug's composition
