Hey Dipti. I had textured walls over which, wallpaper was applied. So, it was pretty difficult to apply the wallpaper due to the roughness. But, I was able to do it by first preparing the surface for the application. I will be able to share how to put wallpaper on rough walls. You will have to make the wall smoother by using a drywall knife and other compounds. I am sharing the steps below.

How to Apply Wallpaper on Rough Wall?

Here are the steps to smoothen rough walls and apply wallpapers:

1. As I had a textured wall with sharp points, I first knocked them off. 

2. You can do this by running a wide drywall knife across the walls, starting at the top and working down. Move the knife in the blade’s direction.

3. Use clean microfiber cloths and TSP to clean the walls well. 

4. Add joint compound to a drywall tray. Push down the compound to press out all the bubbles.

5. Pick up the compound with the edge of the drywall knife. Spread the compound in long strokes across the wall. 

6. Hold the blade at about a 45-degree angle to the wall, spreading the compound with the edge of the blade and not the flat side.

7. Continue till the wall is complete. Let the coat dry for a minimum of 2 hours, but you should preferably give it 12 hours or more. 

8. Sand the wall with a fine-grit drywall sandpaper lightly. Clean the drywall.

9. If you have traditional wallpaper, apply the liquid paste and then start applying the wallpaper.

10. Press the seams firmly with a sponge or the flat of your hand.

My house is full of textured walls. However, I've grown tired of the same textures over time. So, I wanted to cover them with wallpaper, but I was hesitant. I always thought that wallpaper and textured walls are not a good match. So I wanted to know ‘how to put wallpaper for rough walls?’

I spoke with the NoBroker home interior specialist, who said that I should never put wallpaper over any surface that isn't exactly smooth. He suggested that there are several actions I can do to smooth up my textured wall. Wallpapering directly over textured walls will result in a rough, unappealing finish.

• Skimming 

Your wall with a joint compound is the finest approach to smooth it out. If done correctly, this step will fill in all of the wall's unevenness, leaving a perfectly flat surface for the wallpaper to stick to.

Skimming can be done in a variety of ways, such as rolling on a compound that has been diluted to the consistency of pancake batter and then levelling it out with a trowel. I can also use a trowel to apply the compound directly to the wall. This will make the wall as smooth as possible

• Lining paper

   

is pasted to the wall in the same way as wallpaper is. The liner, however, is draped horizontally rather than vertically. Before installing the liner paper, I have to be sure to size or prime/seal the walls.

Because the adhesive used with liner is similar to that used with wallpaper, it will react similarly to an unprimed wall, potentially harming the wall and making paper removal more difficult. I might also need a brush, squeegee, razor, putty knife or straight edge, adhesive (if needed), and water, as well as the equipment that I will need to hang the wallpaper.

To avoid a ridge from overlap, I need to hang the paper with a 1mm spacing between sheets. After which I also need to trim the overlap off once I've applied the paper to the walls by measuring it a little longer than the wall width. Now, I can hang the wallpaper after all of the liner has been hung and dried thoroughly.
