When I had moved into a flat in a new city, my utility bills were not included in my rent, including water. So, in order to monitor my water usage, I needed to know how to read water meter in India. I wasn’t sure about this, as I never did it earlier. Hence, I researched about it and found out that I began by looking for a water meter, which was there outside my residence in a small concrete box.
How Do I Read My Water Meter?
I found it is a simple process that doesn’t even take much time. To read my water meter, I followed the below process.
- I started by finding the water meter, which my landlord said is positioned outside the house.
- The meter face, which showed multiple dials and numbers, was visible when I carefully lifted the lid. In India, most water meters measure water usage in kilolitres (KL). The red digits stand for litres, while the black digits for kilolitres.
For instance, I would record 1234.05 KL for calculations if my meter read 1234 KL and 50 litres.
I would deduct the previous month’s reading from the current reading to find my water usage for the billing month. If 1220 KL was what I last read, then:
Water Used = 1234.05 – 1220 = 14.05 KL.
To estimate my charges, I then multiplied this usage by the rate per kilolitre that was shown on my bill. Hope this helps you out.
