Hey pal,

It isn't logical to replace the floorboard every time you spot a scuff or a scratch. Wooden flooring is cost extensive, and the material and labour both are on the pricier side. I have gathered some tips on how to refinish hardwood floors. These will make your floor look squeaky clean and brand new.

How to refinish a small section of hardwood floors?

If the damage to your floor is minimal, you can just buff the floor with sandpaper. This will get rid of scratches and dullness. Finish the process with a coat of varnish.

If you think you can’t follow the process given above. Contact a carpenter to help you with the project. Their expertise will help you get a shiny floor.

How to sand and refinish hardwood floors yourself?

  • First, you need to check if any part of your floor is broken or cracked. If so, fill the hole with wood filler and a spackle knife. Let the floor dry completely.

  • Next, take the drum sander machine. I would recommend installing it with 40-grit sandpaper. Move the machine with the grain of the wood. Sand the floor in small portions. For the edges, I would recommend using 80 and 120-grit paper instead of 40.

  • Use a pole sander or an industrial floor buffer to biff the entire length of the floor. Move the buffer along and against the grain of the wood.

  • The next step on how to refinish hardwood floors cheap is to vacuum the floor. Make sure there is no dirt or debris.

  • Create a solution of one part denatured alcohol to two parts water. Spray the mix on the floor, ensuring all parts are equally saturated with solution.

  • Stain the hardwood floor with an oil-based stain or sealer of your choice. Let the floor dry completely.
