One day I asked my dad what he was doing, to which he replied he was removing a tap from the pipe. I was curious to see how to remove broken tap from pipe and saw my father doing the entire process. He started by applying lubricating oil and then using a tool to strike the broken tap in the reverse direction, so that the tap can be spun back out. Let me share the detailed steps with you below.

How to Remove Broken Plastic Tap from Pipe?

Before performing the below process, keep in mind that removing the tap can be tough, especially if it is a good quality expensive tap.

This is a simplified method my dad explained to me effectively:

  • Lubricating Oil: Add oil to the hole, then tap the broken end to rotate it backward.

  • Harder Drill Bit: Use a stronger drill bit to bore through the broken tap as if it were regular material.

  • Weld a Nut: Welding a nut to the broken end lets you use a wrench to turn and remove the tap.

  • Create a Slot: Make a slot in the tap end and use a screwdriver to turn it out in reverse.

  • Air Drill: With careful hand control, an air drill can help back the tap out slowly.

  • Punch Tool: Use a punch to enlarge the hole or push out the tap directly.

  • Chemical Solution: Corrosive solutions like nitric acid or “Tap-X” dissolve the tap without harming the workpiece material—except for certain metals like magnesium or cast iron.

This is how to take out broken tap from pipe. Alternatively, you can follow the methods shared by Lucian and Rohan.

I would suggest that you get some professional help for this, as it’s a highly complicated process. I hope you understand how to remove broken tap from pipe.

The most typical feature of mechanical assembly and connections is the use of fasteners with threaded joints. Even with greater caution, internal threads still need to be tapped, which makes them prone to harm. That's not a problem for smaller, less expensive taps because you can scrap them with ease. But, that isn't a feasible choice with a higher-priced tap. You must read below to know how do I remove a broken tap with ease.

How to Get a Broken Tap Out?

Use caution and a few basic tools that I mentioned below to remove a damaged plastic tap from a pipe.

  • Tap extractors detach broken taps thoroughly without creating any damage to the workpiece. These operate flawlessly.

  • An additional typical tool is a cold chisel. By chipping away a small slit near the threaded hole and slowly removing the tap with a screwdriver, you can use it as a broken tap remover.

  • Press the tap after lowering the drill's setting. The broken tap inside may be safely removed due to the continuous action that rotates it

  • To pull the tap out of the hole, use a hammer and another smaller piece, preferably shaped like a cone.

  • One of the best methods how to remove broken plastic tap from pipe while preserving the integrity of the workpiece is to use an EDM machine.

  • Proceed with a drill after flattening out the shattered tap. To create a new hole, you can either use a slightly larger drill or proceed to gradually increase the drill bit's size while making sure the hole's diameter stays the same. Naturally, the drill will remove all of the damaged tap parts.

These are the hacks on how do you remove a broken tap you must follow.

How much does it Cost to Renovate a Bathroom?

Removing the broken tap from the sink becomes hectic as we don't know how to remove broken tap from pipe. I always break my tap, I don't know how! And then I need to wait for the plumber to come to my house and mend the tap. It takes a lot of time and the worst happens when they promise to come but don't show up. This happened a few times in my life and I am sure it has happened to you too. I have tried many ways such as smashing the tap, using an extractor, omegadrill, TIG welding but today I will share with you the most effective way by which you can mend your tap.

The most effective way to fix a tap if you are at home and not an experienced plumber is to use an extractor. Works every time for me!

How to remove broken tap from pipe with an extractor?

The extractor varies in different sizes with 2 to 4 "fingers" which is determined by the number of flutes.

Step by step guide for removing broker tap with extractor:

  1. Eliminate all the broken pieces from the holes.

  2. Choose the correct extractor size with which you can remove the broken tap

  3. Insert the fingers of the extractor carefully into the flutes of the tap. Gently push them without changing the position.

  4. Press the holder until it reaches the broken tap.

  5. Take a tap wrench and try turning it till the taps get removed.
