Yesterday, I turned on the tap in my residence and discovered that the water smelt like rotten eggs. I had an idea, this odour coming from my water heater. So, to fix it, I researched how to remove rotten egg smell from water heater. I came across several processes like flushing the tank completely or replacing the anode rod with a zinc-aluminum rod.
How to Remove Sulfur Smell from Hot Water Heater?
During my research, I found sulfuric or rotten egg smell comes mainly because of a chemical reaction between your system's magnesium anode rod and your water, or the existence of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the water tank.
To fix it, I came across the following DIY method and tried to remove the smell.
I start by turning off the water heater's power source and the water supply.
I then fill the tank with fresh water after entirely emptying it.
Another method I came across was cleaning or replacing the anode rod or installing a water filtration or a water softening system.
I gave it a try today, and while it decreased the odour, it is still present. So, I planned to hire a professional for the upcoming Saturday to clean it. I hope this helps you understand how to get rid of sulfur smell in hot water.
