To prevent scratching the surface, I gently washed the stainless steel with a soft cloth. Light rust stains were easily removed by this technique.
I then used white vinegar for more rust that would not go away. Applied vinegar straight to the corroded areas and left it there for half an hour. The rust was dissolved by the vinegar's acidity. I was relieved to see that most of the rust had disappeared when I cleaned it with a damp towel.
If none of these methods work, I read somewhere that rust stains can also be successfully removed by filling the detergent holder with citric acid and running a cycle.
I learnt from this experience how important it is to deal with rust with timely action and routine maintenance. Hope these steps help you remove dust from your dishwasher as well.
