The cabinets of my kitchen have lost their shine, and I planned to paint them. I wanted to do this as a DIY and I started researching how to repaint kitchen cabinets that are already painted. Through my research I was able to learn about the steps that are necessary to repaint cabinets. The first step for repainting kitchen cabinets is to prepare them by removing all the hardware, such as knobs, handles, etc.
How to Repaint Already Painted Cabinets?
Following that, a thorough cleaning of the kitchen cabinets is necessary. You can use just soap and water for that and dry it with a damp cloth. Here’s what needs to be done next.
Check if there are any holes or cracks in the cabinets. You can use wood filler to fill them and smoothen them with a putty knife.
Next, use 100 or 150-grit sandpaper to remove the existing paint and smoothen the cabinets.
Use a cloth to remove all the dust and debris from over the cabinets.
Now, start priming the cabinets. This is done to create a smooth base to get better adhesion from the paint.
Let the primer dry properly before applying the first coat of paint.
After the first coat of paint has dried, you can apply a second coat if necessary.
This is what I learned after my research on how to paint already painted cabinets. I hope this helps.
