It is hard to give you a proper answer to how to repair a rotted floor without knowing the extent of the damage. When our old house’s wooden flooring got damaged, we hired a professional and let him fix it. That is when I learned about how a rotted floor can be fixed. To repair it, they cut out the damaged wood, treated the area with a wood hardener, and replaced the damaged wood with new ones.

How to Fix a Rotten Floor?

Here is the basic process and steps on how to fix a rotted floor:

  • First, find all the rotted areas and mark them clearly. What you can do is press the entire floor with a screwdriver, and if it sinks in, the wood is likely rotted.

  • Next, use a saw to carefully cut out the rotted section, but make sure to avoid the nearby solid wood.

  • Now, before adding new wood, apply an anti-rot treatment or a wood hardener to stop further decay.

  • Fit a new piece of wood into the cut-out space. I will suggest you choose a wood that matches the floor type and is moisture-resistant if possible.

  • Finally, sand the area to ensure it’s smooth, then paint or stain to match the rest of the floor.

Now there are certain things I personally would like to suggest you:

  • This is not a DIY project and requires precision. If you feel you can do it, go for it, but if not, hire a professional.

  • Make sure you have the right tools like a screwdriver, saw, wood hardener and sandpaper.

  • It is better to dedicate at least three days to complete the task and not leave it midway, or it may further damage the floor.

Wooden floors look lovely, so try to restore their beauty before it's too late.
